Book Part Detached Yet Connected: Life and Tension Between the Dodecanese Islands and the Turkish Mainland in the Interwar Period(Taylor and Francis, 2024) Papuççular, H.This chapter shows that the formation of a vague border in the Aegean Sea after the transfer of the Dodecanese to Italy created legal and quotidian problems for the islanders. It reveals that these problems, ranging from property rights to fishing and sponge-diving rights, could not be solved within this period as constant tension reigned in the Aegean. However, the formation of a border did not mean the total disruption of the connection between the islands and the Anatolian mainland. On the contrary, the mobility of the islanders generated a constant challenge to the notion of a border, the constitution of which was apparently not only a political but also a social process. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Valerie McGuire and Aron Rodrigue.Book Part Citation Count: 0Digital Society and Togetherness Against Discrimination: Analyzing Reactions in Turkish Tweets on George Floyd Protest(Peter Lang AG, 2021) Eyrek Keskin, Aysun; Yeni Medya ve İletişim BölümüThis study aims to examine how people react, interact, and come together against discrimination by using social media even if they are in a spatially different location. George Floyd protests spreading around the world are selected as case study for explaining reaction against discrimination on social media. On May 25, 2020, George Floyd died after being arrested by police officers in Minneapolis, United States. After the footage that displays the fatal arresting of George Floyd by police officers had been circulated on social media, street demonstrations were organized. The reaction of people spread through social media networks around the world. Using social movement theories as a theoretical framework and applying a content analysis, this study focuses on the tweets that are written in Turkish under the hashtags related to George Floyd’s death. The data set involves 12 thousand tweets, between May 28 and June 4 (during the first weeks of protests). The results reveal that social media is an essential part of interaction with people and combination of solidarity against discrimination. © Peter Lang GmbH Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften Berlin 2021.Book Part Citation Count: 0Evaluation of Labor Market Issues in Sport and Exercise Environment in Turkey(Routledge, 2021) Ersoz, Gozde; Ersöz, Gözde; Beden Eğitimi ve Spor Bölümü[No Abstract Available]Book Part Government Responses To the Covid-19 Pandemic: Comparative Health Policies in the Us and Canada(Taylor and Francis, 2023) Erhan, C.; Sıvış, E.In this chapter, we seek to analyse how the United States (US) and Canada handled the COVID-19 pandemic, the resulting consequences on domestic politics, and the overall effect on global geopolitics. The record voter turnout for the 2020 US elections is viewed as an outcome of increased polarisation, politicisation and disinformation, and the general lack of transparency and accountability regarding the COVID-19 crisis under the Trump Administration. On the other hand, although Trump’s isolationist and right-wing policies, in general, pushed Canada into a lonely position in tackling the virus, Canada was able to perform better at handling the virus effectively. Due to robust lockdowns and fiscal stimulus packages and investments in healthcare and COVID-related research, Canada recovered well. Moreover, a comparison of the results of the 2020 US and 2021 Canadian elections indicates that while most Americans distrusted Trump’s pandemic agenda, most Canadians chose to re-elect Prime Minister Justin Trudeau given his successful handling of the virus. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Erman Akilli, Burak Güneş and Ahmet Gökbel.Book Part Citation Count: 0Green jobs in green transformation story(IGI Global, 2024) Alkan, B.Governments around the world are enacting green recovery and transition programs in collaboration with international agencies. Their coordinated efforts attempt to balance economic growth with environmental preservation, emphasizing that for a sustainable and green future the green transformation is an urgent requirement. The employment component of the green transformation has significant social and economic repercussions. Depending on how prepared countries are for the transition process, skill adaptation and the creation of new job opportunities can provide socioeconomic benefits. "Green jobs" are discussed in the chapter as an important part of the transition strategy to a green economy. The chapter outlines what a "green job" is and is not, presents the connection between employment and skills, and emphasizes the relevance of green jobs in the transition process. © 2024, IGI Global. The hip bone consists of three separate bones: the ilium, ischium, and pubis. These bones fuse in the acetabulum region, appearing as a single bone in adults. The sacrum consists of five fused vertebrae. The coccyx consists of four fused coccygeal vertebrae. The hip bones join with the sacrum posteriorly by the sacroiliac joint. Anteriorly, they unite by the symphysis pubis and take the form of a ring. The term “pelvis” is used for the bones that make up the pelvic ring, which is composed of bony structures, and the stabilizing ligaments associated with them; the space enclosed by the bony structure located below the pelvic inlet and above the pelvic floor is called the “pelvic cavity.” The pelvic floor muscles are located at the floor of the pelvic cavity and provide active support to the pelvic viscera. The ligament tissue and fascia surrounding these muscles form the pelvic diaphragm. In this chapter, the structures of the pelvis and their functions will be explained. Along with an explanation of palpation techniques and functional exercises, it would be helpful for pelvic floor dysfunctions specialists. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.Book Part Citation Count: 0Political Discourse on Syrian Refugees in Turkey(Peter Lang AG, 2021) Yiğit Uyar, Merve Hazer; Uyar, C.; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkiler BölümüThis chapter focuses on a comparative research investigation on how populist discourse and securitization on refugees are constituted by partners of political power. The analysis argues that refugees are instrumentalized in domestic/ foreign politics by exposure to exclusionary rhetoric by political parties in Turkey as of 2018. In the context of the research, the official political discourses and statements of five parties during 2018 general and 2019 local election campaigns, the election manifestos, and post-February 2020 Idlib incident were examined. The political parties are AKP, CHP, MHP, İYİ Party, and HDP. In this context, how and for what purposes refugees are securitized with populist rhetoric are examined accordingly. For this analysis, the usage and content of the terms “Syrian, " “refugee, " “immigrant, " “asylum, " and “under temporary protection” were investigated. © Peter Lang GmbH Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften Berlin 2021.Book Part State of the Art of Apple Waste in the Circular Economy(IGI Global, 2023) Büyükselçuk, E.Ç.With the increasing world population, the use of resources has accelerated, environmental problems have increased, and the climate crisis has been faced. As in many sectors, investments are made for the changing process in industry, food, agriculture, livestock, and similar fields. Studies are carried out to evaluate various fruit and vegetable wastes obtained as a result of agricultural activities all over the world. One of these products is apple. In the literature, there are studies on waste generated after processing apple fruit as fruit juice or other apple products. It would not be correct to qualify these residues as waste. Revaluation of these wastes as a result of certain processes is one of the activities of the circular economy. In this chapter, different evaluation methods such as composting, bioenergy production, biochemical production, landfilling, animal feed production, or vegan leather productions that can be applied to apple waste are introduced. The application of different evaluation methods, their advantages and disadvantages are examined. © 2023, IGI Global.Book Part Citation Count: 0Turk and Russian Relations From Distant Neighbourship To Close Neighbourship(Istanbul Univ Press, Istanbul Univ Rectorate, 2021) Baban, Ece; Baban, Ece; Yuce, Muge; Halkla İlişkiler ve Reklamcılık BölümüThe current diplomacy between Turks and Russians, who fought thirteen times between 1677-1918, and who had come on the brink of war many times besides these wars, is one of the most spoken subjects of today. When the history of the relationship between two countries is examined, it is observed that similarities to today's relationship between parties occurred occasionally. These convergences especially in the period after the Cold War, had increased in the period when diplomatic breakups between Turkey and the USA had come up. Historically, Turkey, in its national security calculations, had always followed-up a policy that is taking Russia to the center, and that is balancing the level of threat directed by Russia by the Western allies. Today, the convergence with Russia is being actualized as the result of a reverse functioning of a similar strategic calculation.Book Part Where Are We and What Should We Do in Cleaner Production Transformation(IGI Global, 2023) Büyükselçuk, E.Ç.Until recently, production models developed according to market conditions focused on reducing costs and increasing profitability at the expense of the destruction of natural resources and the deterioration of ecological balance and human health. However, today, with the effects of the deterioration in the ecosystem reaching sensible dimensions and being accepted as a global threat, a new production approach is needed. Due to environmental pressures, new markets and scarce resources, development, and economic growth are being tried to be redefined. Traditional production methods and environmental technologies are no longer sufficient to provide resource efficiency and increase environmental performance. Therefore, the need for new systems, processes and technologies has arisen for the restructuring of the industry and the creation of green business models. In this chapter, it is discussed how the cleaner production approach will contribute to this transformation, considering the green transformation efforts in question and considering the current situation of the Turkish industry. © 2023, IGI Global.
