When central nervous system has a problem, somatic area I and II respond to stimulation differently. Therefore, it is possible to identify some of the central nervous diseases when somatosensory on the fingertip is stimulated and responses are recorded and analyzed. We designed a system to stimulate the mechanoreceptors on fingertips. It is composed of a mechanical system for fingertip stimulation, an embedded controller, a control computer, and a software to control overall operation. During test, mechanoreceptors are stimulated according to the test protocols. Individuals' answers are recorded to be evaluated by the developed software. In this study, several design approaches for embedded controller were also examined and an FPGA based controller with the same functionality but higher performance was implemented. A test procedure was performed on 51 individuals at the department of pediatric psychiatry in a hospital, to investigate whether the sex has an effect on attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: An increase in respiratory work load and resistance to respiration cause a decrease in respiratory muscle endurance (RME) in patients with obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS). We aimed to evaluate and compare RME in subjects with OHS and a control group using an incremental load test and compare the RME of subjects with OHS in whom noninvasive ventilation (NIV) was and was not used. METHODS: Forty subjects with OHS (divided according to body mass index [BMI] as group I: 30-40 kg/m(2); and group II: 6 40 kg/m(2)) and 20 subjects with obesity (control group: 30-40 kg/m(2)) were included in the study. RME was evaluated using the incremental load test, and respiratory muscle strength (RMS) was evaluated using mouth pressure measurements. The 6-min walk test, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), EQ-5D Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (EQ-5D), and the Obesity and Weight-Loss Quality of Life Instrument (OWLQOL) were performed. RESULTS: RME and RMS (%) in group I were lower than the control group (P=.001, P=.005, and P=.001, respectively). No significant difference was found between the 3 groups in terms of 6-min walk distance (6MWD) percentage predicted values (P=.98). RME in the NIV user group was higher than the non-user group (P 5.006). ESS, total PSQI, and FSS scores in the control group were less than group I (P=.01, P=.009, and P=.005, respectively) and group II (P 5.01, P <.001, and P <.001, respectively). The EQ-5D scores of the control group were higher than group II only (P=.005 and P=.005, respectively). There were no differences in OWLQOL between the groups (P=.053). CONCLUSIONS: RME was low in subjects with OHS but higher in those who used NIV. The incremental load test could be performed easily and safely in a clinic setting.

Symptoms Experienced at Home and Self-Care Requisites of Patients After Heart Transplantation: A Retrospective Study

Heart transplantation is the most important treatment option in end-stage heart failure, and heart transplant recipients should be monitored at home by healthcare professionals in terms of symptoms and self-care requisites. The aim of this study is to examine symptoms and self-care requisites of patients with heart transplantation after discharge. Symptoms and self-care requisites of 81 patients who had heart transplantation between 2015 and 2020 were evaluated retrospectively in this study. Survey data were collected using the telephone interview method. It was determined that 77.8% of the patients were male and their mean age was 41.87 +/- 2.51 years. Fatigue (91.4%), pain in the back, neck, and joints (86.4%), restlessness/agitation (81.5%), weight gain (71.6%), and edema in the lower extremities (71.6%) were the first 5 common symptoms experienced at home after heart transplantation. It was also found that the vast majority of patients (80.2%) answered negatively to the question of eliminating the lack of knowledge about the disease, and some of the patients were found not to pay attention to some important issues (e.g., regular blood pressure check, quitting smoking, etc.). Findings revealed that patients with heart transplantation experience a series of symptoms, and their self-care requisites were mostly focused on education and information specific to the disease after discharge. As a part of public health nursing practices, home care concentrating on symptoms and learning needs of patients should be planned and organized with a multidisciplinary approach to decrease rehospitalization and contribute to cost-effectiveness after heart transplantation.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive deterioration of cognitive functions (dementia) and represents a growing public health concern since the population in the age groups at risk is increasing. The latter raises an urgent need to translate research findings in the basic brain and behavioral sciences into anti-AD drugs and disease-modifying therapies. Origanum onites (L.), also called Turkish oregano, is a perennial and herbaceous plant species grown for centuries for medicinal, cosmetic and culinary purposes. This is the first study to investigate the putative neuroprotective and pro-cognitive activities of O. onites essential oil (OOEO) against scopolamine-induced amnesia of AD-type in Wistar albino rats. The results of behavioral tests revealed that OOEO administration was able to significantly alleviate learning and memory impairments induced by scopolamine in vivo. The observed effects could be attributed to inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity, attenuation of oxidative stress and prevention of neuronal apoptosis in the hippocampus and frontal cortex of AD rats. Modulation of pro-inflammatory enzymes, including cyclooxygenase-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase and myeloperoxidase, might further contribute to the neuroprotective properties of OEOO, as predicted by our in silico models. These findings offer novel insights into the therapeutic potential of OEOO in patients with AD.
