Article Current Exercise Approaches Used To Improve Athletic Performance(2022) Alpözgen, Ayşe İstanbul Üniversitesi-cerrahpaşa Zengin; Sirma, Gamze Çağla; Işıklar, ÇağdaşSport, which means entertainment, is all of the body movements that are beneficial for physical and psychological development within the framework of certain rules and techniques, and have the purpose of competition as well as having fun. With the increasing value given to sports and athletes from past to present, it has gained importance that athletes and sports teams achieve new successes. For this purpose, a wide variety of exercise approaches have emerged to improve and maintain athlete performance. These approaches are Blood Flow Restriction Training, High-Intensity Interval Training, and Sprint Interval Training. In this review, the effects of these current exercise approaches, which are used to improve and protect athlete performance are summarized based on current studies. There has been increased interest in exercise interventions that provide health benefits with shorter exercise times to improve athlete performance. This study aims to summarize the effects of Blood Flow Restriction Training, High-Intensity Interval Training, and Sprint Interval Training applied in short periods on athlete performance based on current literature. PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases were searched with the keywords "blood flow restriction", "high-intensity interval training", and "sprint interval training". Articles published in or after January 2011, whose full text is available, and whose language is English or Turkish, were examined within the scope of this study.Article Shoulder Muscular Activation during Common Kettlebell Exercises: A Randomized Cross-Sectional Surface EMG Study(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2026) Paköz, Büşra; Işiklar, Çağdaş; Turgut, ElifPurpose This study aimed to examine shoulder muscle activation patterns within functionally similar upper-body exercise categories performed using different resistance modalities. Methods Twenty healthy males (mean age 22.6 +/- 1.69 years) performed overhead pressing, rowing, and swinging tasks using kettlebells, dumbbells, and elastic bands. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to record activity from seven shoulder muscles. The recorded electromyographic signals were normalized to maximal voluntary isometric contractions (%MVIC), log-transformed, and analyzed using a two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) with exercise and muscle as within-subject factors. Results A repeated-measures ANOVA on log-transformed EMG data showed significant main effects of exercise (F(2.10, 39.95)=22.04, p<.001, eta(2) p=.537) and muscle (F(4.49, 85.34)=47.55, p<.001, eta(2) p=.714), as well as a significant exercise & times;muscle interaction (F(8.16, 154.98)=82.84, p<.001, eta(2) p=.813). Within the overhead pressing category, the Bottoms-Up Kettlebell Overhead Press elicited significantly greater activation than the traditional Kettlebell Overhead Press in the upper trapezius, lower trapezius, biceps brachii, and infraspinatus (all p<.050), with upper trapezius activation reaching 30.4 +/- 13.4%MVIC. In the rowing category, middle and lower trapezius activation was greater during free-weight rowing than during elastic band rowing, while serratus anterior activation remained relatively low across the rowing conditions. In the swing category, activation patterns were largely comparable between the two-hand kettlebell and dumbbell swings, whereas the one-hand kettlebell swing produced greater activation in selected muscles, with the lower trapezius showing the highest activation. Absolute between-exercise differences in %MVIC were modest. Conclusion Kettlebell, dumbbell, and elastic band exercises elicit distinct shoulder muscle activation profiles. These findings may inform exercise selection and program design when targeting specific shoulder muscles within task-oriented training contexts.Article Motor Learning in Sport Rehabilitation(2022) Işıklar, ÇağdaşCognitive views on movement execution during the early development of a skill recognize that this skill is highly dependent on the formation, retrieval, and application of consciously accessible declarative information in working memory. During this early declarative phase of skill acquisition, the attention demands of motion preparation and control are high, but as the learner becomes more proficient, the declarative information supporting motion practice gradually evolves into a rich procedural representation. It doesn't need to be done consciously and requires much less attention. Much of the way people respond to and adapt to the environment happens indirectly without this conscious awareness. Nevertheless, motor skills in sport and any number of learned skills necessary for daily life are often clearly acquired and this can result in enormous contributions from consciousness during their execution. Although motor learning is important in current approaches, it is one of the neglected subjects in rehabilitation programs, especially in the field of sports. The aim of this study is to examine the importance of motor learning, cortical plasticity and neuromuscular training in sports rehabilitation.Article Integration of Yoga Into Exercise and Its Relationship With Core Stabilization(2023) Işıklar, ÇağdaşYoga is one of the complementary methods used by many clinicians and physiotherapists today to support general rehabilitation programs. It is also increasingly used as a complementary treatment for psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, and symptoms of various medical conditions, including pain affecting the spine, musculoskeletal disorders, and diseases such as cancer and asthma. In addition to these benefits, it is also reported that yoga has positive effects on the cognitive system. In this mini review, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects of yoga and yoga practice on core stability. Our clinical suggestion is that core-focused Yoga and Yoga method may be used to enhance the lumbopelvic stability, and core region muscles.Article The Effect of Sportive Latin American Ballroom Dance on Foot and Ankle Posture(2024) Coşkunsu, Dilber Karagözoğlu; Kayışkıran, Onurcan; Işıklar, ÇağdaşArticle Genç Erişkinlerde Kor Endurans, El Kavrama Kuvveti ve Reaksiyon Süresi Arasındaki İlişki(2025) Tekın, Demet; Tosun, Anil; Gül, Ezgi; Işıklar, Çağdaş; Eryıldız, EzgiAmaç: Çalışmanın amacı, genç erişkinlerde kor endurans, el kavrama kuvveti ve reaksiyon süresi arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektir. Yöntem: Bu kesitsel ve gözlemsel çalışmaya yaş ortalaması 21,07 (1,46) olan 52 lisans öğrencisi dahil edilmiştir. Kor enduransı (McGill'in Kor Endurans Testleri), el kavrama kuvveti (Jamar Hidrolik El Dinamometresi) ve alt ekstremite reaksiyon süresi (OptoGait cihazı) değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: Sol-sağ gövde lateral kor enduransı testi ile sağ (sırasıyla; r=0,51; r=0,47; p<0,001) ve sol el kavrama kuvveti (sırasıyla; r=0,52; r=0,51; p<0,001) arasında orta düzeyde, pozitif bir korelasyon bulundu. Sol-sağ gövde lateral kor enduransı testi ile sağ alt ekstremite reaksiyon süresi (sırasıyla; r=-0,38; p=0,005; r=-0,39; p=0,004) arasında zayıf, negatif bir korelasyon bulundu. Sol ve sağ el kavrama kuvveti ile sağ alt ekstremite reaksiyon süresi arasında da zayıf, negatif bir korelasyon vardı (sırasıyla; r=-0,32; p=0,02; r=-0,37; p=0,006). Ayrıca, sağ dominant bacağa sahip katılımcılarda, sağ alt ekstremite reaksiyon süresi ile sağ el kavrama kuvveti arasında orta düzeyde, negatif bir korelasyon (r=-0,40; p=0,01) ve sol ve sağ gövde lateral kor enduransı testi ile zayıf, negatif bir korelasyon (sırasıyla; r=-0,35; p=0,03; r=-0,33; p=0,04) bulundu. However, there is no study examining the Turkish-adapted patient outcome measures (PROMs) on the shoulder according to the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist. In addition, there is a small number of studies that carry out this examination on the shoulder internationally. Determining the most appropriate questionnaires for clinical use will also be an important guide in patient evaluation by filling the gap in both literature and clinical aspects.Objective Our aim in this study is to identify the valid and reliable Turkish scales used to evaluate shoulder pain and disability, to reveal how compatible these scales are with the aspects of study quality and psychometric quality according to COSMIN criteria list.Methods A systematic search was performed in the following electronic databases: MED-LINE, Web of Science (WOS), EMBASE, SCOPUS, and ULAKBIM were searched from inception to September 2024.Results A total of 2890 articles were found in the databases. Four articles were included additionally without a search. Then, after eliminating the duplicates, 2231 articles were included based on the title and abstract search. 63 articles were included in full-text review. After the full-text review, according to our criteria, 29 articles were included in the systematic review. According to the assessment by the COSMIN checklist, 28 articles received the final classification of "inadequate". Only 1 article (UCLA-Tr) received the final classification of "adequate".Conclusion There is a wide range of Turkish PROMs available for the shoulder, with only one fully meeting COSMIN methodology criteria. However, this does not imply that other PROMs lack clinical utility. Future studies should focus on refining PROMs by incorporating MCID and PASS scores and prioritizing their responsiveness to enhance their clinical relevance. The questionnaire was sent to 300 patients with MS who were registered at Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty Neurology Department.Results: A total of 156 people (mean age: 35.33 +/- 10.47 years) participated in the survey. Smartphone 98.1% (n = 153) was the mostly used device. Rate of using Google and recommended websites about MS was 94.25% (n = 145) and 73.9% (n = 113), respectively. e-Health literacy of both the tablet and recommended websites users significantly differed from that of nonusers (p = 0.007 for both). Participants' e-health literacy total score was found to weakly, but significantly, correlate with their age, marital status, and education level (rho: -0.161, p = 0.044; rho: 0.172, p = 0.032; rho: -0.192, p = 0.016, respectively).Conclusions: With developments in digital technologies, it is important to identify the access status of people with MS to improve daily clinical management and implement further motor and cognitive rehabilitation. Therefore, determining the health literacy of individuals with MS and providing education on this subject will reduce the information pollution.Article Investigating Compliance With a Home Exercise Program in People With Multiple Sclerosis(AVES, 2025) Tekeoğlu Tosun, A.; Yilmaz, N.; Eryildiz, E.; Işiklar, Ç.; Hotaman Kekli̇Cek, H.; Keklicek, Hilal; Tosun, Anıl TekeoğluObjective: This study aims to evaluate the status of receiving home exercise programs and adherence among individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), providing insights for clinical practice. Methods: Individuals diagnosed with MS, aged 18 and over, literate, and reached through the social media platforms of the MS Society of Türkiye, were included in the study. Individuals who did not fully complete the questions asked and/ or gave answers irrelevant to the topic, who reported comorbidities that may prevent participation in exercise along with MS, and those not meeting the specified age criteria were excluded from the study. Data were collected through an online questionnaire assessing MS patients’ sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and their engagement and adherence to home exercise programs. Results: A total of 217 people (n = 36) male, (n = 181) female, participated in the study. While the rate of having a prescribed home exercise program among all participants was 12.90%, this rate was 8.33% for men and 13.81% for women. When the compliance of the participants with home exercise programs was examined, all men stated they sometimes applied these programs. This rate was found to be 52% for women. Conclusion: The study demonstrated that a considerable proportion of individuals with MS did not engage with the prescribed home exercise programme. Furthermore, the adherence rates and frequency of exercise updates were found to be inadequate. Since the MS population is increasing steadily in Türkiye, it is vital to facilitate access to effective exercises for people with MS and to ensure lifelong compliance with these exercises. © 2025 AVES.
