    Examination of the Mental Health Status of University Students Directly or Indirectly Affected by the Earthquake

    Objective: This study examines the mental health status of university students directly affected by the earthquake in the disaster zone and those indirectly affected by being outside the earthquake zone during the Kahramanmaraş earthquake that struck Turkey on February 6, 2023. Methods: A total of 109 students from 37 universities in 24 cities participated. Data were collected using an online survey that included a Demographic Information Form, the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), the Earthquake Anxiety Scale, the DSM-5 PTSD checklist, and the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale-21. Mental health outcomes of directly and indirectly affected students were compared. Results: Students directly affected showed significantly higher levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and earthquake-related anxiety. Among indirectly affected students, females reported higher IES-R, PTSD, and earthquake anxiety scores than males. Regression analysis identified factors such as earthquake exposure, loss of relatives, involvement in search and rescue, and relocation as linked to adverse mental health outcomes. Conclusion: Although students directly affected by the earthquake are at greater risk for PTSD, depression, and anxiety, both groups face significant mental health problems. As these effects may be ongoing rather than temporary, the role of occupational therapy in promoting occupational engagement and mental health in disaster management is noteworthy. © The Author(s) 2025

    Effect of Interactive Wearable Sensor Technology Training in Physiotherapy Students

    Objective: Wearable sensor technology offers significant potential in physiotherapy and rehabilitation by providing new ways to monitor patient progress and assess interventions. Despite this, its integration into physiotherapy education is still emerging. This study evaluates the impact of interactive sensor training on the knowledge level of wearable sensor technology among physiotherapy students. Method: A total of 111 physiotherapy students from Fenerbahçe University's Faculty of Health Sciences participated in this study. The training involved hands-on sessions with Euleria Health's Riablo and XClinic products. The training session, focused on wearable motion sensors using Euleria Health's Riablo and XClinic products, was conducted to enhance students' understanding. Knowledge levels were assessed before and after the training using a specially designed 20-item Likert-type questionnaire. Results: Paired-samples t-tests and Pearson correlation analyses were conducted to evaluate the data. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge scores post-training, rising from 66.00±17.58 to 77.65±22.06 (p<0.001). Pearson correlation analysis indicated a positive relationship between students' CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) and their pre- and post-training knowledge scores, with correlations of r=0.230 (p=0.018) and r=0.275 (p=0.005), respectively. Conclusion: The findings indicate that direct, interactive sensor training substantially improves physiotherapy students' understanding of wearable sensor technology. The observed positive correlation between academic performance and knowledge gains suggests that students with higher academic achievements may derive greater benefits from this training. Integrating such practical sessions into educational programs is essential for equipping future professionals with the skills needed to effectively implement emerging technologies in clinical practice.

    Integrating 3D-Printed Task-Specific Terminal Devices with a Standard Myoelectric Prosthesis in a Patient with Systemic Scleroderma and Transradial Amputation: A Case Report

    ABSTRACT – Objective – The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of personalized task-specific 3D-printed terminal devices integrated with a standard myoelectric prosthesis in improving functional independence and comfort in a patient with systemic scleroderma and transradial amputation. Methods – A 57-year-old female patient with systemic scleroderma and a left transradial amputation used the following three task-specific 3D-printed adaptive terminal devices—a sock aid, buttoning tool, and jar opener—developed using Tinkercad and fabricated with PLA via FDM printing. These devices were integrated into her pre-existing standard myoelectric prosthesis (Ottobock MyoFacil, four-channel transradial model), which the patient had already been using for daily activities. Functional outcomes were assessed using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and visual analog scale (VAS) for pain. Results – Canadian Occupational Performance Measure scores increased from 2/10 to 7–8/10 in performance and satisfaction. Functional Independence Measure scores improved from 4 to 6, reflecting reduced need for assistance in self-care. VAS scores decreased from 7/10 to 3/10, indicating reduced pain during activities of daily living. Conclusions – The integration of low-cost, patient-specific 3D-printed terminal devices with an existing myoelectric prosthesis significantly improved function, independence, and comfort. This case supports further exploration of additive manufacturing as a complementary strategy to enhance prosthetic function in individuals with rare and complex impairments. Clinical Relevance – 3D printing offers a scalable, adaptable solution for task-specific 3D-printed terminal devices, particularly in patients with systemic comorbidities. © 2025 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins

    The Effect of Neck Mobilization Vs. Combined Neck and Lumbar Mobilization on Pain and Range of Motion in People With Cervical Disc Herniation: a Randomized Controlled Study

    Background: To assess the effectiveness of Kaltenborn-Evjenth Orthopedic Manual Therapy (KEOMT) applied to cervical-only mobilization versus both lumbar and cervical regions on pain intensity and range of motion (ROM) in individuals with cervical disc herniation. Methods: Thirty-three participants were enrolled in the study. The patients were randomly assigned to two groups. Group A received cervical-only KEOMT, while Group B received combined lumbar and cervical KEOMT. Interventions were administered three times a week for four weeks. Pain was measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), ROM was assessed for flexion and lateral flexion, and Neck Pain and Disability Index (NPDI) and Short-Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) were used for evaluation. Results: In intra-group measurements, a statistically significant difference was observed in all parameters of pain, ROM, disability, and quality of life for the mobilization methods applied in both groups (p < 0.05). Group B demonstrated significantly greater improvements in ROM/flexion, pain, and disability outcomes compared to Group A in inter-group measurements (p < 0.05). Physical and emotional sub-groups of quality of life measures also favored Group B in intergroup analysis (p < 0.05). However, the power values for ROM and quality of life parameters were found to be low. Conclusions: The cervical plus lumbar KEOMT technique is more effective than cervical-only mobilization in improving pain and disability. However, low power values for ROM and quality of life suggest these results may lack clinical significance, warranting further research.

    Genç Elit Yelkencilerde Gövde Kas Enduransı, Kuvvet, Güç, Denge ve Esnekliğin Karşılaştırılması

    Amaç: Çalışma, genç elit yelkencilerde core dayanıklılık seviyeleri, denge performansı, kas kuvveti ve esneklik arasındaki ilişkiyi değerlendirmek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Sporcular Galatasaray yelken kulübünden rastgele seçilmiş ve windsurfing (n=14), optimist (n=13) ve lazer (n=13) yelken sınıfları olmak üzere göre üç gruba ayrılmıştır. Yelkencilerin demografik özellikleri, vücut kitle indeksleri ve dominant tarafları kaydedilmiştir. Üst ekstremite kuvveti, el dinamometresi kullanılarak değerlendirildi, alt ekstremite gücü ise dikey sıçrama, uzun atlama ve tek ayakla sıçrama testleriyle değerlendirildi. Core dayanıklılık değerlendirmesi için mekik, plank ve rotary stabilite testleri uygulanmıştır. Denge ve esneklik değerlendirmesi için Y denge, düz bacak kaldırma, omuz esneklik, otur- uzan, omuz elevasyon ve tüm vücut rotasyon testleri uygulanmıştır. Üç gruptan elde edilen veriler Kruskal-Wallis H testi kullanılarak analiz edildi ve gruplar arası karşılaştırmalar Mann-Whitney U testi ile yapıldı. Bulgular: Yelken sınıfları gruplar arası karşılaştırıldığında hem sağ hem de sol elin ortalama değerleri açısından el kavrama testi sonuçlarında anlamlı bir fark vardır ve en yüksek ortalama değer laser grubundadır (p&lt;0,001). Durarak uzun atlama testi sonuçlarında gruplar arasında anlamlı fark olduğu görülmüştür ve en yüksek ortalama değer laser grubundadır (p&lt;0,001). Tek bacak zıplama testi sonuçlarına göre anlamlı fark vardır ve en yüksek ortalama değer rüzgar sörfü grubundadır (p&lt;0,05). Y dengesi testi sonuçlarına göre hem sağ hem de sol tarafta gruplar arasında anlamlı bir fark vardır ve en yüksek ortalama değer optimist grubundadır (p&lt;0,05). Sonuç: Bu sonuçlar özellikle kuvvet ve denge parametrelerinde, her yelken sınıfının farklı fiziksel özelliklere sahip olduğunu ve spesifik performans parametrelerine ihtiyacı olduğunu göstermektedir.

    Investigating the Impact of Various Insole Applications on Balance and Postural Stability in the Elderly

    Objectives: Aging leads to physical and cognitive declines, notably affecting balance and motor skills, making falls a prevalent health concern among the elderly. Falls, a significant health issue among the elderly, often stem from these impairments. This study aims to investigate the impact of different insole materials, specifically cork and silicone, on balance and postural stability in the elderly. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted at the Istanbul Barinyurt Elderly Care Center with 24 participants, divided into two groups to test cork and silicone insoles. Balance parameters, plantar pressure, the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and the Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test were used as measures. Data analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests. Results: Post-intervention, the cork insole group showed significant improvements in balance, maximum plantar pressure, and functional mobility tests compared to the silicone insole group. While both insoles enhanced certain balance parameters and walking performance, cork insoles proved more effective in key outcomes. Additionally, maximum plantar pressure for the cork insoles group decreased significantly, indicating better pressure distribution and potentially enhanced balance. Conclusion: Cork insoles are superior to silicone insoles in improving balance and postural stability among the elderly. This study supports using cork insoles as part of fall prevention strategies, emphasizing the importance of material properties in orthopedic insole design. Future research should explore long-term effects and integrate insoles with other postural stability methods for comprehensive elderly care.

    Structured Multi-Modal Rehabilitation Program for FHL Tendinitis and Os Trigonum Excision: A Case Report

    Flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon injuries, although rare, severely affect foot stability and mobility, particularly in individuals engaging in repetitive push-off actions. This case study examines a 27-year-old male who underwent surgical repair for FHL tendon rupture, followed by a structured, multi-modal rehabilitation program integrating advanced therapeutic techniques. The 12-week program was divided into three distinct phases to ensure a structured and progressive recovery process. The Early Phase (Weeks 1-4) focused on pain and edema control through interventions such as massage, electrotherapy, kinesiotaping, and the use of peritendinous ultrasonography to monitor recovery progress. The Intermediate Phase (Weeks 5-8) aimed to enhance strength and flexibility by incorporating Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF), weight-bearing exercises, dynamic stretching, and the progressive integration of Graston massage techniques. Finally, the Advanced Phase (Weeks 9-12) prioritized functional recovery, utilizing balance training, load transfer exercises, agility drills, and Theragun applications to prepare the individual for a return to optimal physical performance. Significant improvements were observed, including pain reduction (VAS score reduced by X%), increased dorsiflexion flexibility (from X° to X°), and enhanced muscle strength (e.g., tibialis anterior strength increased by X%). Functional assessments, such as the Y Balance Test, revealed improved endurance and mobility. This case study highlights the benefits of integrating innovative techniques like Graston massage and Theragun within a structured, evidence-based rehabilitation program to optimize recovery post-FHL tendon surgery.

    Innovative Interventions for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: Combining 3D Orthoses with Schroth Exercises to Improve the Angle of Trunk Rotation, Balance, Respiratory Function, and Quality of Life

    Introduction: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional (3D) spinal deformity affecting posture, respiratory function, and quality of life. Combining customized 3D orthoses with Schroth exercises may improve both structural and functional outcomes, yet evidence on short-term physiological adaptations remains limited. Objective: The aim was to examine the short-term effects of combined 3D spinal orthosis and Schroth exercise therapy on trunk rotation, respiratory function, dynamic balance, and quality of life in adolescents with AIS. Methods: Thirty adolescents with AIS (aged 10–18 years) participated in this study. All had a primary Cobb angle between 26° and 40°, while smaller compensatory curves were excluded. Each participant was fitted with a custom-made thoracolumbosacral orthosis designed via 3D scanning and wore it at least 18 hours daily. Schroth exercises were performed three times weekly for 4 weeks after a 3-day adaptation period. Assessments included trunk rotation (scoliometer), spirometry (forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in 1 second, and peak expiratory flow), dynamic balance (Y Balance Test), and quality of life (Scoliosis Research Society-22 questionnaire). Data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance ( P &lt; 0.05). Data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance with Bonferroni post hoc corrections, paired samples t tests, and effect size calculations ( P &lt; 0.05). Results: Trunk rotation in thoracic and lumbar regions decreased significantly ( P &lt; 0.001), exceeding the 2° measurement error threshold. Respiratory parameters improved significantly ( P &lt; 0.05, moderate to large effect sizes). Dynamic balance scores slightly declined ( P &lt; 0.05), indicating short-term adaptation. Scoliosis Research Society-22 questionnaire scores improved in all domains, especially pain, self-image, and satisfaction ( P &lt; 0.05). Conclusions: Combined 3D orthosis and Schroth therapy produced meaningful short-term improvements in spinal alignment, respiratory function, and quality of life, while minor balance decline reflected transient postural adaptation. Clinical Relevance Statement: The results of this study provide evidence for the clinical application of combined 3D thoracolumbosacral orthoses and Schroth-based exercises to facilitate early gains in trunk rotation, respiratory function, and overall quality of life by informing the creation of conservative treatment plans during the early stages of adaptation to those treatments in adolescents diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis.
