    Evaluation of Dietary Habits and Related Parameters in a Group of Inpatients With Mental Disorders

    Objectives: This study aimed to examine the dietary habits and related parameters of individuals with mental disorders. Methods: This study was descriptive and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 94 individuals hospitalized in the psychiatric clinic of a hospital between June and December 2021. Data were collected using an information form cre- ated by the researchers. Results: Of the participants, 83% were male, and 25.5% had a chronic physical illness. The patients had a diagnosis of mental disorder for an average of 6.07 years. The most common side effect was an increase in appetite (36.4%). Additionally, 76.6% ate within 15 minutes, 93.6% consumed fish once a week or never, and 56.4% never exercised. In- dividuals who consumed home-cooked meals had lower BMI averages than those who consumed fast food. A weakly significant positive correlation was found between BMI and waist circumference averages and the duration of medica- tion use. Individuals with anxiety disorders had lower waist circumference, glucose, and LDL values compared to those with mood disorders. In contrast, individuals with psychotic disorders had significantly lower LDL levels than those diagnosed with mood disorders. Conclusion: Individuals with mental disorders were found to have inadequate and unbalanced nutrition, consuming diets rich in carbohydrates and low in protein, which negatively affected their parameters. Psychiatric nurses should evaluate the dietary habits of patients and provide counseling about healthy nutrition.

    Antioxidants, Enzyme Inhibitory Activities, and Phytochemical Profiles of Seven Medicinal Plants Grown With Organic Farming Techniques

    In this study, the potential antihyperlipidemic, antidiabetic, and antiobesity effects of extracts obtained via infusion techniques from Artemisia absinthium L., Achillea millefolium L., Calendula officinalis L., Fumaria officinalis L., Mentha piperita L., Origanum onites L., and Urtica dioica L. grown with organic farming techniques were investigated using enzyme inhibition methods (alpha-glucosidase, pan-creatic cholesterol esterase, pancreatic lipase, and alpha-amylase). It is important that natural compounds or extracts to be used in the treat-ment of metabolic problems have antioxidant effects. The antioxidant effects of these species were tested in terms of ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing power, and metal chelating capacity. Extracts (2 mg/mL) of M. piperita (91.43 +/- 0.90%) and O. onites (70.18 +/- 2.02%) showed potent inhibitory effects on the alpha-glucosidase enzyme. Among all species, only O. onites extract ex-erted an inhibitory effect on the cholesterol esterase enzyme close to that of reference compound simvastatin. While all extracts were effective in the tested antioxidant activity methods, it was determined that the M. piperita and O. onites extracts displayed particularly significantly strong activities in terms of ferric reducing power, ABTS radical scavenging effect, and metal chelating capacity. The total flavonoid and phenolic contents of all extracts were determined. The compositions of the most active extracts were analyzed for pheno-lic acids and flavonoids using RP-HPLC. The results of RP-HPLC analysis showed that the levels of ellagic acid (0.923 +/- 0.000 g/100 g extract) in the M. piperita extract and rosmarinic acid (0.813 +/- 0.003 g/100 g extract) in the O. onites extract were high. As a result, all species grown with organic farming techniques except U. dioica were found to have high antioxidant effects. In light of these findings, it was concluded that M. piperita and O. onites grown with organic farming techniques showed strong inhibitory effects in terms of the tested activities, especially for alpha-glucosidase and pancreatic cholesterol esterase, and that in vivo studies and activity-guided isolation studies should be conducted on these species in the future.

    Relationship Between Coronaphobia, Cognitive Functions, Sleep Quality, and Diet Quality in Older Adults During Covid-19

    Objective: The relationship between the quality of diet and sleep, cognitive function, and fear related to coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) among older adults in Turkey during the pandemic remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between diet quality, cognitive function, sleep quality, and levels of coronaphobia in individuals aged 65 and above, to understand the impact of COVID-19. Materials and Methods: Sleep quality, diet quality, coronaphobia, and cognitive status of 72 older individuals were evaluated using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index, healthy eating index 2010, Montreal cognitive assessment scale, and coronavirus-19 phobia scale, respectively. Results: The participants had poor diet quality (54.2%), poor sleep quality (62.5%), obesity (41.7%), higher levels of coronaphobia, and cognitive impairment. There was a moderate negative relationship between sleep quality and coronaphobia and between cognitive status and coronaphobia (p <= 0.00); and a weak positive relationship between diet quality and cognitive status (p<0.05). However, no relationship was found between sleep quality and diet quality, and between coronaphobia and diet quality (p>0.05). Conclusion: Our study highlights the significant challenges faced by older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic, including poor nutrition quality, sleep disturbances, coronaphobia, and cognitive impairment. Our findings suggest a potential interplay between nutrition quality, sleep patterns, and cognitive function among older adults, with those experiencing coronaphobia exhibiting additional cognitive and sleep-related concerns. We advocate the implementation of targeted interventions aimed at mitigating cognitive impairment, addressing nutritional deficiencies, and improving sleep quality among older adults, irrespective of COVID-19 infection status, to enhance overall well-being during these challenging times.

    Effects of <i>myrtus Communis</I> L. Extract and Apocynin on Lens Oxidative Damage and Boron Levels in Rats With a High Fat-Diet

    Objectives: Nutritional obesity causes oxidant damage in the body and cataract formation in the lenses by increasing the formation of free radicals. Myrtus communis leaf extracts (Myr) have antioxidant properties, and apocynin (Apo) is an effective NADPH-oxidase inhibitor. The data on tissue boron levels are quite lacking. The aim of this novel study was to investigate the effects of Myr and Apo treatment on boron levels and oxidative lens damage in rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Materials and Methods: Wistar albino male rats were randomly divided into four groups: the control group, HFD group, HFD + Myr group, and HFD + Apo group. Body weight and blood lipids were determined before and after the experiment. After decapitating the rats, the lenses were removed and homogenized. Catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and boron, malondialdehyde (MDA), and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in the lens homogenates were determined. Results: The HFD increased serum triglyceride (p<0.05), total cholesterol level (p<0.001), body weight (p<0.001), and lens MDA levels (p<0.01) and decreased lens GSH (p<0.05) and boron level (p<0.01), SOD (p<0.001), and CAT activity (p<0.001). However, Myr and Apo treatment reduced the rats' body weight (p<0.001), serum triglyceride (p<0.05), and total cholesterol level (p<0.001) and increased lens boron (p<0.01; p<0.001), GSH levels (p<0.05; p<0.01), and CAT activity (p<0.001). Conclusion: Both Myr and Apo may be able to reduce oxidative stress in the lenses of obese rats caused by HFD by increasing boron levels.
