Article Ludwig's Angina in a 6-Year Child: Case Report(Wiley, 2025) Akbari, Negarin; Razavi, Ali; Sabzi, Zahra; Parhiz, JabbarLudwig's angina is a rare but potentially fatal cellulitis that affects the submandibular, sublingual, and submental spaces, typically triggered by dental infections. This case report details a severe presentation of Ludwig's angina in a 6-year-old girl who presented with submandibular swelling, fever, voice alterations, and respiratory distress. Diagnosis was based on clinical evaluation, supported by CT imaging, revealing significant airway narrowing and lymphadenopathy. The patient was promptly intubated to secure the airway, followed by emergency surgical drainage and intravenous antibiotics. Postoperative care included sedation, ongoing monitoring in the PICU, and close follow-up by multiple specialties. After a 10-day hospitalization, the patient showed significant recovery with no complications. The case underscores the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in preventing severe complications such as airway obstruction, sepsis, and mediastinal spread. It highlights the critical role of interdisciplinary collaboration, including pediatric infectious disease specialists, surgeons, and anesthesiologists, in managing this life-threatening condition effectively.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Are Child and Parent Health Behaviors Associated With Childhood Obesity? a Descriptive and Methodological Study(Elsevier Science inc, 2023) Ozturk, Gizem; Kolcu, MervePurpose: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between child and parents' health behaviors and childhood obesity. In addition, an adaptation of the Turkish version of the Family Health Behavior Scale (FHBS) was performed in this study.Design and methods: This is a descriptive and methodological study. The research sample consisted of 358 parents who have a child between the ages of 5 and 12 studying in one of the seven state schools at the kindergarten, primary, and secondary school levels in Istanbul. Data were collected between February 2022 to May 2022 using the Parent and Child Descriptive Information Form, the Family Nutrition and Physical Activity (FNPA) Screening Tool, and the FHBS. IBM SPSS 25.0 (IBM, Armonk, NY, USA) and SPSS AMOS 21.0 software were used to analyze the data.Results: It was found that the confirmatory factor analysis result of FHBS confirmed the original structure of the scale, and Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was calculated as 0.80. A positive correlation was found between the parents' total scores of FNPA and FHBS (r:0.511, p < 0.001).Conclusions: It is recommended to evaluate the child and their parents holistically in preventing and managing childhood obesity. School health nurses should plan family-centered interventions to improve health behaviors and carry out these interventions with a multidisciplinary team. Moreover, it has been determined that FHBS is a valid and reliable measurement tool for the Turkish population.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 8Experiences of Hearing Parents of Children With Hearing Loss: a Qualitative Study(Mdpi, 2023) Dikec, Gul; Turk, Eda; Yuksel, Esin; Celebi, Kubra; Ozdemir, MeltemThis qualitative study was carried out with a phenomenological design to determine the life experiences of the parents of children with hearing loss. The study sample consisted of twenty parents, who did not have hearing loss, of children with hearing loss registered in a special education and rehabilitation center. The data were collected through in-depth interviews in Istanbul between December and January 2022. Colaizzi's phenomenological interpretation method was used for qualitative data analysis. It was determined that parents of children with hearing loss experienced anxiety, sadness, and happiness during diagnosis. They needed more information at first, but then they gained knowledge in the process, and it took work to accept this process. They stated that having a child with hearing loss requires more time, responsibility, and effort than other children. This situation affects their social life, and they experience interpersonal conflicts. When parents were asked how they coped, they said they did it through prayer, social support, or time to themselves. It can be recommended to apply psychosocial intervention programs to the parents of children with hearing loss, especially their mothers, from the first diagnosis process.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2The Effect of a Video-Based Covid-19 Paediatric Patient Education on State Anxiety in Children With Suspected Covid-19 Admitted To Hospital(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2023) Sanci, Yagmur; Celik, Serap; Yildiz, SuzanBackground: Anxiety causes the long-term psychological impacts on children during the pandemic.Objective: The aim of this study is to reduce anxiety in paediatric patients and increase their adherence to treatment through a video-based COVID-19 paediatric patient education.Methods: This quasi-experimental study with pretest-posttest single group was carried out in a research hospital's COVID-19 Paediatric Emergency Area in Turkey between May and August 2020. The sample consisted of 128 children aged between 4 and 12 years.Results: In the study, it was found that 50.8% of the children who came to the COVID-19 Paediatric Emergency Area due to suspicion of COVID-19 were boys and their mean age was 8.54 & PLUSMN; 2.62. 21.1% of the children were hospitalised before and 73.4% were afraid of the hospital. State stress scores of the participants before the patient education were higher in those, who didn't attend school between ages of 4-10, than those who went to school. State stress mean scores of the children from all age groups decreased significantly after the education.Conclusions: The video-based paediatric patient education decreases the children's hospital-related anxiety during the pandemic and increased their adherence to treatment.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Evaluation of Coping Mechanism of Mothers of Children With Chronic Diseases During Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic(Aves, 2024) Erkut, Zeynep; Kose, Selmin; Savaser, Sevim; Kaya, Gizem; Ogut, Nehir UluAIM: The aim of this study was to determine the problems, perceived stress, and coping with the stress of mothers of children with chronic diseases during the pandemic. METHODS: The study was conducted with cross-sectional design. The data were gathered from the mothers of children with chronic diseases who were followed up at the endocrine outpatient clinic of a hospital in Istanbul between February 1, 2021, and May 31, 2021. The data were collected by conducting face-to-face interviews with mothers of 117 children through information form, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Coping with Stress Scale (CSS). RESULTS: It was determined that 35.9% of the mothers stated that they had problems during the pandemic since their children suffered from chronic diseases. The mean scores of the mothers were 26.88 +/- 6.69 points for the PSS and 87.35 +/- 11.04 points for the CSS and there was a negative and weak correlation between their scale scores (r = -.190; p < .05). CONCLUSION: It was found that families faced many different problems during the pandemic, such as the treatment and control of their children. In case of extraordinary situations such as pandemics, nurses should provide planned guidance and counseling services to children with chronic diseases and their families in order to manage the negative situations they experience.
