Article Evaluation of Dietary Habits and Related Parameters in a Group of Inpatients With Mental Disorders(Kare Publ, 2025) Dikec, Gul; Ata, Elvan Emıne; Özer, Duygu; Çalışkan, Mahinur Betül; Taliskan, Mahinur BetulObjectives: This study aimed to examine the dietary habits and related parameters of individuals with mental disorders. Methods: This study was descriptive and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 94 individuals hospitalized in the psychiatric clinic of a hospital between June and December 2021. Data were collected using an information form cre- ated by the researchers. Results: Of the participants, 83% were male, and 25.5% had a chronic physical illness. The patients had a diagnosis of mental disorder for an average of 6.07 years. The most common side effect was an increase in appetite (36.4%). Additionally, 76.6% ate within 15 minutes, 93.6% consumed fish once a week or never, and 56.4% never exercised. In- dividuals who consumed home-cooked meals had lower BMI averages than those who consumed fast food. A weakly significant positive correlation was found between BMI and waist circumference averages and the duration of medica- tion use. Individuals with anxiety disorders had lower waist circumference, glucose, and LDL values compared to those with mood disorders. In contrast, individuals with psychotic disorders had significantly lower LDL levels than those diagnosed with mood disorders. Conclusion: Individuals with mental disorders were found to have inadequate and unbalanced nutrition, consuming diets rich in carbohydrates and low in protein, which negatively affected their parameters. Psychiatric nurses should evaluate the dietary habits of patients and provide counseling about healthy nutrition.Article Life and Stigma Experiences of Individuals with Substance Use Disorder: A Qualitative Study(Turkish Green Crescent Soc, 2025) Dikec, Gul; Umut, Gokhan; Albal, EsraThis study aimed to determine the life and stigma experiences of individuals with substance use disorder who received inpatient treatment in an adult detoxification center. Data for this qualitative phenomenological study were collected in Istanbul between April and December 2023. The data were analyzed using Colazzi steps. A total of 26 individuals with substance use disorder were interviewed. The content analysis identified three main themes. The initial topic discussed was the effect of substance use on individuals’ lives. The sec- ond theme discussed was stigmatization. The final theme addressed coping with stigmatization. The study revealed that participants experienced negative emotions, including regret, guilt, and shame, due to stigma- tization, exclusion, and discrimination. Substance use treatment should not only focus on pharmacotherapy but also the psychological and social needs of the individual. Furthermore, to address negative attitudes in society, mental health professionals could inform families and disseminate anti-stigma programs.Article The Challenges Experienced by International Nursing Students in Nursing Education: a Qualitative Study(Ataturk Univ, 2024) Elmali Simsek, Hulya; Karali, Ece; Arslan, Gunay; Elmalı, Hülya; Özoğul, EceObjective: The study aimed to determine the challenges experienced by international nursing undergraduate students during their education period. Methods: A phenomenological research design was used. The study was conducted with 20 international nursing students enrolled in a foundation university in T & uuml;rkiye. Colaizzi's phenomenological data analysis method was employed in the study. Results: Based on the study's results, three main themes, 'Learning in a different environment', 'Challenges', 'Solution-Non Solution' and 'System difference, Language problems in clinical practice, Broad nursing curriculum, Facilitators, Language barrier, Feeling homesick, Racism and discrimination, Housing difficulties, Lack of funding, Instant solution, Failing to find a solution sub-themes themes were created. Conclusion: It has been observed that students experience different environments, uncertainties, and various challenges, and that these situations directly affect their education and success. To that end, both the institutions they receive education and the academicians must support the students in various ways.Article Nursing Students Thoughts and Knowledge Levels About Global Warming(Marmara Univ, inst Health Sciences, 2024) Gür, Kamer; Kolac, Nurcan; Çalık, Kesver Burcu; Nirgiz, Cansu; Doğan, RıdvanObjective: The aim of this study is to determine nursing students’ thoughts and knowledge levels about global warming. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 236 nursing students studying at the faculty of health sciences of a state university between May and July 2022. Data were collected using a Sociodemographic Form, the Global Warming Questionnaire. Independent Samples t-test, One-Way ANOVA were used to evaluate the data. Results: Ninety-seven percent of the students stated that global warming was a public health issue. Students’ mean score on the global warming knowledge scale was 90.02±8.76. There was a significant difference between the mean scale score participating in activities on the subject, having received information/education on environment, climate change aside from undergraduate education, wanting to become a member of an environmental non-governmental organization, and school year (p <.05). Conclusion: Participants’ knowledge level about global warming was above the average value of the scale. However, they still needed information, greater sensitivity to participate in environmental non-governmental organizations, global warming activities. For all these reasons, it is recommended that nursing students increase their knowledge and sensitivity during their undergraduate education, learn ways to combat the adverse effects of climate change, put them into practice.Conference Object Safe Drug Administration in Pediatric Nursing Education: A Quasi- Experimental Design Study(Atatürk Univ, 2023) Kan Onturk, Zehra; Sanci, Yagmur; Öntürk, Zehra KanObjective: This study was carried out to determine the correlation between the performance of students who received simulation-based pediatric nursing education and their self-confidence regarding safe drug administrations during simulation. Methods: The study was conducted in pretest and posttest quasi-experimental design and carried out on a sample group (n = 39) based on criteria established at the Nursing Department of a foundation university. Students were subjected to a simulation of "Drug Management in Children" within the scope of the pediatric nursing course. The researchers collected data through a checklist, a self-confidence scale, and tests (pretest and posttest) used in the simulation application on "Drug Management in Children." Results: The students obtained a mean score of 129.00 +/- 14.36 on the self-confidence scale. The posttest scores of the students were statistically significantly higher than the pretest scores (P = .011). The performance mean score of the students from the simulation checklist for safe drug administrations was 36.28 +/- 6.65. There was no statistically significant correlation between the scores from the self-confidence scale, the pretest, the posttest, and the checklist scores (P > .05). Conclusion: This study underlines the importance of having a suitable level of self-confidence for students' educational gains and also indicated that there was no correlation between self-confidence and performance.Article Nursing Student's Perceptions of the Clinical Learning Environment, Supervision and Nurse Teacher: a Cross-Sectional Study(Ataturk Univ, 2024) Karaca, Anita; Kizilkaya Beji, Nezihe; Kaya, Gizem; Beji, Nezihe KızılkayaObjective: This study aimed to determine nursing students' perceptions of the clinical learning environment, supervision and nurse teacher, and its affecting factors. Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted with 205 students using the Student Information Form and the Clinical Learning Environment, Supervision and Nurse Teacher Evaluation Scale. The study included 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year nursing students studying in the spring semester of 2020-2021. Data were collected by online method. Descriptive statistics (means, frequencies and percentages), Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis analyses were used to analyze the data. Results: The students of 59.5% stated their opinions were not taken during clinical practice placement, whereas 71.2% of them were placed in the compatible clinical environment. The students did not experience any problems during their clinical practice (77.6%) and they evaluated their satisfaction as "good" (37.6%). The lowest and highest sub-dimension scores from the scale were the "Pedagogical Atmosphere on the Ward (3.71 +/- 1.15)" and the "Premises of Nursing on the Ward (3.93 +/- 1.13)", respectively. The sub-dimension mean scores of the scale were significantly different from satisfaction with clinical practice, problems encountered during clinical practice, and placement in the compatible clinical environment (P<.001). Conclusion: Nursing students had a good perception of the supervision, learning environment, and nurse teacher. A positive clinical environment for nursing students that allows them to take an active role in patient care and nursing practice should be developed and maintained.Article Opinions of Students in the Field of Health on Distance Education During the Covid-19 Pandemic: a Cross-Sectional Study(Galenos Publ House, 2024) Kaya, Gizem; Karaca, Anita; Beji, Nezihe KizilkayaObjective: It is important to determine the opinions and preferences of students about distance education as its use is becoming more and more prevalent because of the Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic. It was aimed to determine the opinions of students in the field of health about distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study which was conducted at the Faculty of Health Sciences of a foundation university in stanbul. The data were obtained from 476 students who were studying at the Faculty of Health Sciences of a university between June and July 2021, using a Student Information Form and Student Opinions on Distance Education Survey. Results: When asked their opinions on distance education, most described that face-to-face education was more useful than distance education (65.1%) and that having practical lessons with distance education negatively affected their learning (61.1%). Conversely, most of the students expressed that they could listen to the parts of the lessons they did not understand again (93.1%), could listen to the lessons they missed (90.3%), and that distance education provided them with the convenience of taking lessons wherever internet access was available (76.7%). Conclusion: The results indicated that students did not have considerable problems during distance education, they benefited from the advantages of distance education and were generally satisfied with it. In relation to the problems experienced during the pandemic, we recommend to take measures especially for applied lessons, to continue to benefit from the advantages of distance education by combining it with formal education in appropriate lessons, and to make necessary improvements by evaluating the opinions of students on a departmental basis.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Evaluation of Coping Mechanism of Mothers of Children With Chronic Diseases During Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic(Aves, 2024) Erkut, Zeynep; Kose, Selmin; Savaser, Sevim; Kaya, Gizem; Ogut, Nehir UluAIM: The aim of this study was to determine the problems, perceived stress, and coping with the stress of mothers of children with chronic diseases during the pandemic. METHODS: The study was conducted with cross-sectional design. The data were gathered from the mothers of children with chronic diseases who were followed up at the endocrine outpatient clinic of a hospital in Istanbul between February 1, 2021, and May 31, 2021. The data were collected by conducting face-to-face interviews with mothers of 117 children through information form, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Coping with Stress Scale (CSS). RESULTS: It was determined that 35.9% of the mothers stated that they had problems during the pandemic since their children suffered from chronic diseases. The mean scores of the mothers were 26.88 +/- 6.69 points for the PSS and 87.35 +/- 11.04 points for the CSS and there was a negative and weak correlation between their scale scores (r = -.190; p < .05). CONCLUSION: It was found that families faced many different problems during the pandemic, such as the treatment and control of their children. In case of extraordinary situations such as pandemics, nurses should provide planned guidance and counseling services to children with chronic diseases and their families in order to manage the negative situations they experience.Article Citation - WoS: 3Psychometrics of Stanford Presenteeism Scale-Short Form in Turkish(Cordus, 2022) Teoman, Ezgi; Seren, Arzu Kader HarmanciAIM: Presenteeism means that employees feel obliged to go to work even if there is a real problem that they cannot work.The main purpose is to to adapt the "Stanford Presenteeism Scale-Short Form" into Turkish on Nurses. METHOD: This is a methodological study. The study sample included the nurses working at the medical and surgical clinics of two public hospitals in 2017 in Istanbul. A total of 290 nurses participated in the study. Language, content, construct validities, total item correlation analysis, Kaiser Meyer Olkin, Bartlett tests, confirmatory and explanatory factor analysis (EFA), stability, and Cronbach's alpha reliability analyses were tested. RESULTS: The content validity index of the scale was.92. Two items that have correlation values below.40 were removed from the Turkish form. Cronbach's alpha internal consistency coefficient was.762. The structure of the four-item and single-factor Turkish form was confirmed. CONCLUSION: Stanford Presenteeism Scale-Short Form is a valid and reliable tool for the nurses in Turkey. It is recommended to be used among nurses in different studies. Hospital and nursing care service managers should deal with "presenteeism," since it is becoming a critical health human resource workforce issue. Health care managers may use this tool to evaluate the presenteeism level of their employees.Article Validity and Reliability of the Symptom-Management Self- Efficacy Scale for Breast Cancer Related To Chemotherapy(Galenos Publ House, 2022) Semiz, Demet; Saglam Aksut, Rabia; Sağlam, RabiaObjective: Since breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common cancer types among women, it is very important for nurses to assess symptom-management and self-efficacy of patients during chemotherapy treatment. This study was carried out to examine the validity and reliability of the symptom-management self-efficacy scale for BC related to chemotherapy. Methods: The study sample of this methodological research consisted of 248 women receiving chemotherapy treatment due to breast cancer in a public hospital in Istanbul between November 2017 ans March 2018. Translation-back translation method was used to assess the language validity of the scale. Kaiser-Mayer-Olkin and Bartlett's tests were applied to evaluate the sampling adequacy and the suitability of the data for factor analysis. Results: The content validity of the Turkish form was 0.912; Cronbach alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.905. The factor loads of all the items belonging to the scale were above 0.40, and explained variance for the scale was as follows; 16,284 for the problem-solving sub-dimension; 13,517 for the sub-dimension of managing problems in emotional and interpersonal relationships, and total explained variance of the scale was found to be 46,944. For this reason, no items were removed from the scale and the scale was accepted as having 3 sub-dimensions as it was in the original. Conclusion: Findings obtained from this study showed that the Turkish version of the scale was valid and reliable and could be used in research and clinical practice in Turkey.
