Article Nursing Students Thoughts and Knowledge Levels About Global Warming(Marmara Univ, inst Health Sciences, 2024) Gür, Kamer; Kolac, Nurcan; Çalık, Kesver Burcu; Nirgiz, Cansu; Doğan, RıdvanObjective: The aim of this study is to determine nursing students’ thoughts and knowledge levels about global warming. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 236 nursing students studying at the faculty of health sciences of a state university between May and July 2022. Data were collected using a Sociodemographic Form, the Global Warming Questionnaire. Independent Samples t-test, One-Way ANOVA were used to evaluate the data. Results: Ninety-seven percent of the students stated that global warming was a public health issue. Students’ mean score on the global warming knowledge scale was 90.02±8.76. There was a significant difference between the mean scale score participating in activities on the subject, having received information/education on environment, climate change aside from undergraduate education, wanting to become a member of an environmental non-governmental organization, and school year (p <.05). Conclusion: Participants’ knowledge level about global warming was above the average value of the scale. However, they still needed information, greater sensitivity to participate in environmental non-governmental organizations, global warming activities. For all these reasons, it is recommended that nursing students increase their knowledge and sensitivity during their undergraduate education, learn ways to combat the adverse effects of climate change, put them into practice.Article Citation - WoS: 5Apocynin Ameliorates Testicular Toxicity in High-Fat Diet-Fed Rats by Regulating Oxidative Stress(Marmara Univ, inst Health Sciences, 2023) Hersek, Irem; Koroglu, M. Kutay; Coskunlu, Busra; Ertas, Busra; Sener, Goksel; Ercan, Feriha; Köroğlu, KutayObjective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of apocynin (APC), an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase (NOX), on high-fat diet (HF)induced testis cytotoxicity.Methods: Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups as control, HF and HF+APC groups. Rats in HF and HF+APC groups were fed using HF for 16 weeks and in the last four weeks of this period vehicle solution or APC (25 mg/kg) was administered orally five days a week, respectively. Control group was fed with standart lab chow for 16 weeks. Cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoproteins, leptin, estrogen, testosterone, LH and FSH were estimated in blood serum. Sperm parameters were analysed from the epididymis. Testicular malondialdehyde, 8-hydroxy-2deoxyguanosine, glutathione, superoxide dismutase and myeloperoxidase levels were estimated biochemically. Testicular morphology, proliferative, apoptotic and NOX2-positive cells were analysed histologically.Results: HF-induced obesity caused significant alterations in serum lipid and hormone profiles. Testicular malondialdehyde, 8-hydroxy-2deoxyguanosine, and myeloperoxidase levels increased, glutathione and superoxide dismutase levels decreased in this group. Moreover, altered sperm parameters, increased degenerated seminiferous tubules, apoptotic and NOX2 - positive cells and decreased proliferative cells were observed in the HF group. All these biochemical and histological alterations improved in the HF+APC group.Conclusion: HF-induced obesity causes altreations in lipid values, sperm parameters and testicular morphology by increasing oxidative stress through NOX2 activity. Apocynin might prevent testis damage via regulating oxidant/antioxidant balance.Article Determining the Effects of Nasopharyngeal Suction With Negative and Positive Pressure: Randomised Controlled Trial(Marmara Univ, inst Health Sciences, 2024) Kokkiz, Rukiye; Okuroglu, Guelten Karahan; Ustun, NuranObjective: The study aims to determine the effects of nasopharyngeal suction with negative and positive pressure on pain level, respiratory parameters, and mucosal irritation in infants. Methods: This study was conducted as a posttest randomized controlled experimental research. The data was collected at G & ouml;ztepe Training and Research Hospital between January and November 2020. While the positive pressure suction method was applied to the experimental group, the negative pressure suction method was applied to the control group. Results: It is determined that the pain level mean scores at the 1 st and 5 th minutes after the suction procedure are lower in the experimental group than in the control group (p=0.01). p =0.01). SpO2 values at the 1st, st , 5th, th , and 15th th minutes after the procedure are significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (p=0.01). p =0.01). There is no statistically significant difference in the respiratory rate values between experimental and control groups (p>0.05). p >0.05). Conclusion: It is determined that the post-procedure pain level is lower and the SpO2 value is higher in the experimental group (positive pressure suction) compared to the control group (negative pressure suction). Both methods do not cause mucosal irritation, as well.Article Citation - WoS: 3Morphological and Biochemical Investigation of the Healing Effects of Exercise on High Fat Diet Induced Kidney and Bladder Damage(Marmara Univ, inst Health Sciences, 2022) Elmas, Merve Acikel; Ozakpinar, Ozlem Bingol; Kolgazi, Meltem; Sener, Goksel; Ercan, FerihaObjective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ameliorative effects of swimming training on renal and bladder damage caused by a highfat diet (HFD) using morphological and biochemical measurements. Methods: Sprague Dawley rats were fed either standard chow (CONT, 6% fat) or HFD (45% fat) for 18 weeks, these rats were divided into two subgroups at the last 6 weeks of the experiment. The exercise groups (CONT+EXC, HFD+EXC) were trained daily swimming sessions (1 h per day for 5 days/week) during the last 6 weeks. Kidney and bladder samples were prepared for light and electron microscopic examination at the end of experiment. Malondialdehyde, glutathione, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-a were measured by biochemically. Results: Regular morphology of the renal cortex and bladder mucosa was observed in the CONT and CONT +EXC groups. Degenerated renal corpuscles and proximal tubules in the kidney and degenerated urothelium with leaky tight junctions and mast cell increase in the bladder mucosa were observed in the HFD group. Ameliorated renal cortex and bladder mucosa were observed in the HFD+EXC group. In addition, malondialdehyde, glutathione, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-a levels were also consistent with the histological findings. Conclusion: HFD-induced renal and bladder damage may be related to increased oxidative damage. It was observed that the histological damage and altered oxidative stress parameters could be reversed by swimming training, and it is thought that moderate swimming exercise may play a role in regulating oxidative stress.Article Evaluating the Styles of Coping With Stress of Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis During the Covid - 19 Pandemic(Marmara Univ, inst Health Sciences, 2022) Eroglu, Nermin; Tosun, AnilObjective: Multiple sclerosis (MS)is among the most influential environmental factors. Quarantine days during Covid-19 outbreak can cause conditions such as anxiety, isolation stress, financial and long-term economic stress, including health concerns.The descriptive study was planned and applied with the aim of examining the impacts of Covid-19 pandemic on the styles of coping with stress of individuals with multiple sclerosis. Methods: The study was carried out on 246 volunteer individuals during April2020-May2020 following the approval of the Turkey MS Association and the briefing provided to the individuals.The data were acquired via Personal Information Form and The Styles of Coping with Stress Scale. Results: The mean age of individuals with MS was 39.41 +/- 9.06 years. Statistically significant increase was found in the sub-dimensions of optimistic and helpless approach with gender, submissive approach with marital status, helpless and submissive approach with education status, helpless, submissive and seeking social support sub-dimensions with working status (p<0.0, p<0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that individuals with MS use the helpless approach and submissive approach most frequently in coping with stress during the Covid-19 pandemic.It was determined that those living with their families mostly use the optimistic approach and selfconfident approach.It is thought that MS associations will be effective in coping with stress in reducing symptoms and social and physical support through informative meetings, home visits, psychotherapies, yoga and organized trainings.Article Citation - WoS: 1Time Difference Between Onsets of Lateral and Medial Hamstring Muscles During Gait in Patients With Patellofemoral Pain: a Preliminary Study(Marmara Univ, inst Health Sciences, 2022) Coskunsu, Dilber Karagozoglu; Can, Filiz; Kuchimovs, Shavkat; Akalan, Nazif Ekin; Kilicoglu, I. Onder; Ozturk, Necla; Kuchimov, Shavkat; Kılıçoğlu, Önder İsmetObjective: Early activation of lateral hamstrings (LH) relative to medial hamstrings (MH) has been thought to be the cause of abnormal knee abduction and external rotation of the tibia, which affects the orientation of patellar tendon and increases lateral patellofemoral compression. Therefore, early activation of LH relative to MH is considered to have a role in the patellofemoral pain (PFP). The aim of this study was to investigate the time difference between MH and LH onsets in patients with PFP during gait. Methods: Thirteen patients with bilateral PFP (mean age 28.73 +/- 7.44 years) and 13 asymptomatic subjects (mean age 30.47 +/- 6.22 years) were recruited in the study. Gait analysis was performed using the ELITE system (BTS, Milano-Italy) with video cameras (TVC, BTS, Milano-Italy). Participants were requested to walk at a self-selected speed on a force platform, and EMG data were recorded from MH and LH muscles for 10 initial contacts by using TELEEMG (BTS, Milano-Italy). Time difference between the onsets of the MH and LH was calculated for each initial contact by using moving averaging method, then their mean was obtained for each participant. Results: The time difference between onsets of MH and LH was - 26.9 +/- 22.2 ms for PFP subjects and - 11.2 +/- 14.2 ms for control subjects, and LH mainly became activated earlier compared to MH in most of the subjects in both groups. There was a statistically significant difference between the time differences of the groups (p=0.041). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that LH displayed an earlier activation in subjects with PFP compared to control subjects during gait.
