    The Current Face of Mosaic Art: Flacking Istanbul Examples

    French artist Ememem is an anonymous artist who started producing his artworks in the city of Lyon in 2016. The unknown street artist brought a contemporary perspective to the art of mosaic by decorating or patching the sidewalks with mosaic art. The term ‘flacking’, which he developed to express the combination of various fields such as upcycling, street art, mosaic art, is becoming increasingly common and attracting the attention of local municipalities. The aim of this study is to discuss the art of flacking, which is a face of mosaic art, which is a very old branch of art, derived from current terms. In terms of scope, examples from Istanbul will be tried to be found and compared with foreign examples. Examples from around the world show how mosaic art can be transformed into impressive and meaningful projects in public spaces. However, it has been seen that modern mosaic trials are still insufficient in our country. It has been determined that for the development of mosaic art, various courses, workshops, contemporary examples to be applied in public spaces and initiatives should be made in order not to lose this valuable art. © (2025), All Rights Reserved.

    Effects of Computer-Based Balance Exercises on Balance, Pain, Clinical Presentation and Nerve Function in Patients With Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: a Randomized Controlled Study

    Objective:To evaluate the use of a computer-based biodex balance exercise system (BBS) on balance, neuropathic pain, clinical presentation and nerve function in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Methods: A total of 32 participants with DPN were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to an intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). The IG performed exercises using the BBS twice weekly for 8 weeks, while CG were informed regarding diabetes self-management. At baseline and after study completion, participants underwent balance (postural stability and fall risk) and neuropathic pain assessment (DN4 questionnaire) and were screened using the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument and nerve conduction test. Results: Among the baseline participants, 14 in the IG and 13 in the CG completed the study. Balance training improved postural stability (overall, p<0.001), fall risk (p<0.001), neuropathic pain (p=0.01) and symptoms (p<0.001), and clinical presentation (p=0.02), but not nerve function, within the IG. At follow-up, IG displayed significantly improved stability (p<0.001) and fall risk (p=0.02) and decreased neuropathic symptoms (p=0.01) compared to the CG. Conclusion: Computer-based balance exercises improve balance, pain, and clinical presentation of DPN, but not nerve function, in patients with DPN.     Comparison of Motorcyclists' Hand Grip Strength and Reaction Time

    The purpose of this study was to compare hand grip strength and reaction times in male motorcycle racers grouped according to different ages and the classes of motorcycle used and determine the relation between these characteristics. Sixty-five healthy male motorcycle racers were divided into four groups according to their age and the power of the motorcycles' engine: (Group-1 [G1] = 600CC/23-34 years; Group-2 [G2] = 600-CC/35-48 years; Group-3 [G3] = 1000-CC/23-34 years; Group-4 [G4] = 1000-CC/35-48 years). Then, Nelson's reaction time and maximal hand grip strength were measured for both hands. There were no significant differences between the groups' grip strength (p>0.05). It was found that G1's right-and left-hand reaction time was faster than that of G2, and G1's left-hand reaction time was faster than that of G3 (p<0.05). The right-hand visual reaction time was found to have a negative weak correlation with the left-hand absolute grip strength (r=-0.247, p=0.047), and there was a weak positive correlation between the left-hand visual reaction time and height (r=0.315, p=0.011). G1's right-hand visual reaction time was better than that of G2 (p < 0.001), and G1's visual left-hand reaction time was better than those of G2 (p < 0.034) and G3 (p < 0.011). Although the absolute and relative hand grip strength values did not differ according to the ages and the engine power of the motorcycle used, it was found that the simple reaction time increased with increasing age.

    Medical Ethics Assessment Scale for Sports: a New Tool

    The purpose of this study was to develop the Medical Ethics Assessment Scale for Sports (MEASS) and to asses the vison of amateur level competitor athletes, using this scale, about level of compliance with professional ethical principles of their health professionals and the sports medicine organisations with which they come in contact. The study was conducted on 400 participants (n(female)=145; n(male)=255) aged 16-35 from different sports. MEASS was constructed with 13 items and three factors: 'Not harming the patient's body', 'Informing the patient', and 'Maintaining patient's privacy and right to choose care'. The validity value was found to be 0.795. The exploratory factor analysis showed all three factors had eigenvalues greater than 1.0 (55.7% variance). Cronbach's Alpha reliability (alpha) correlation coefficient was 0.725. These results showed that the scale is suitable for factor analysis and reliable. The MEASS can be used as a new measurement tool to evaluate the ethics of health professionals and organisations. The results also demonstrated that athletes feel well-informed and unharmed by their physicians, but would prefer more control over their care choices and how their personal information is used.

    Bibliometric Analysis of Publications on Stigmatization in Psychiatric Nursing Literature

    Objectives: In the past two decades, the number of publications on stigma has increased in the literature. This study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of publications related to stigmatization in the psychiatric nursing literature. Methods: In this study, a search was performed on the PubMed database on September 11, 2022, with the Medical Searching Terms "(Stigmatization [Title OR Abstract] OR Social Stigma [Title OR Abstract]) OR (Stigma [Title OR Abstract] OR Stereotyping [Title OR Abstract] OR Discrimination [Title OR Abstract]) AND (Psychiatric Nursing [Title OR Abstract] OR Nursing [Title OR Abstract])." Between 1990 and 2022, 10,571 studies published in English, available in full text, and published in journals indexed with SCI, SSCI, and ESCI were found. Results: The number of published articles reached the highest number in 2020, with an increase of 4.05 times in 30 years; it was determined that 92.8% of the publications were of the descriptive study, and Happell was the most productive author in this field. Frequently, articles were published in the Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing (n=762), Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services (n=550), International Journal of Mental Health Nursing (n=480), Issues in Mental Health Nursing (n=445), and Journal of Advanced Nursing (n=429). It was determined that the top five most frequently repeated keywords were humans, female, psychiatric nursing, male, and adult, respectively. Conclusion: The findings obtained from this study can provide information about the number of publications, research types, researchers, and institutions, as well as give ideas for new research strategies in psychiatric nursing literature. Establishing cooperation between institutions and authors can guide psychiatric nurses in creating projects to reduce stigma.

    Analysis of Selected Steroid Hormones in Sea of Marmara Sediment Samples by Lc-esi/Ms-ms

    Background and Aims: Sediment is the general name given to the muddy structure located at the bottom of aquatic environments such as the sea. In our study, the amounts of steroid hormones were investigated in the sediment samples taken from the Marmara Sea. According to other studies, it has been determined that the excess of the hormone load in the sediments may be an indicator of human/animal sourced pollution, as well as the negative effects of the hormones mixed in the seas with the ecological cycle on the health of humans and animals.Methods: In our study, 31 selected human/animal, plant, natural and synthetic hormone-steroids were studied using Liquid Chromatography Electrospray Ionization Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-ESI/MS-MS). Methanol and QuEChERS were used as extraction methods. Sediment samples were taken from a total of 27 points selected for sampling at the Marmara Sea.Results: According to the results we found, the androgens: androsterone (24.50-1718.18 ng g-1), testosterone (86.30-1600.32 ng g-1); the estrogens: mestranol (33.73-228.32 ng g-1), equilin (53.44-1232.53 ng g-1); the progestagens; pregnenolone (37.50374.76 ng g-1), progesterone (39.96-405.60 ng g-1); levonorgestrel (325.25 and 937.93 ng g-1); the fecal sterols: cholestanone (57.57-1726.32 ng g-1), coprostanol + epicoprostanol (51.43-1370.33 ng g-1); and the plant sterol; campesterol (35.30-1859.90 ng g-1) were the compounds detected.Conclusion: Estrogens and progestogens are active components of birth control pills, and cholestanone and coprostanol + epicoprostanol are steroids that are indicative of human/animal pollution. Coprostanol + epicoprostanol and cholestanone, which are indicators of fecal pollution, were detected in all sediment samples. In our study, steroid hormones were detected for the first time in Sea of Marmara sediments and possible environmental risks were evaluated.

    Turkish Translation/Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Analyses of the Affordances in the Home Environment for Motor Development-Infant Scale (ahemd-Is)

    In this study we translated the Affordances in the Home Environment for Motor Development-Infant Scale (AHEMD-IS) into Turkish, adapted the instrument culturally, examined its psychometric properties within a Turkish population, and identified its limitations. We administered the AHEMD-IS to families of 65 premature or full-term Turkish infants and repeated this testing for 17 families after one-two weeks to establish test-retest reliability. We calculated the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach alpha coefficient to assess reliability, and we evaluated test validity using the Spearman's correlation coefficient and correlations with the Bayley-III motor development score. The Cronbach Alpha coefficient of the questionnaire was 0.846, and, for test-retest reliability, the ICC score was 0.830. The Turkish AHEMD-IS total score was moderately correlated with the Bayley-III fine motor development score (r = 0.469, p < 0.001), the Bayley-III gross motor development score (r = 0.533, p < 0.001), and the Bayley-III total motor development score (r = 0.526, p < 0.001). The Turkish version of the AHEMD-IS was found to be valid and reliable for children born prematurely or at full-term. The use of this questionnaire in Turkey will facilitate the creation of a home environment that will support motor development in children between 3-18 months of age.

    Reading Basic Design Principles Through Modern Architectural Structures

    Basic design principles are taught within the scope of basic design education in the first-year studios. Basic design education and its content have different dimensions from the education system the student previously received due to its structure and difficulty comprehending because it contains new literature for the student and often has abstract educational content. On the other hand, the students have difficulty perceiving the information acquired in this course and question how they can benefit from it in the following years and professional life. Therefore, the aim of the study is to analyze the basic design principles through modern architectural structures. In the study created by qualitative research method, the data were obtained by analyzing the principles mentioned in the determined examples. These examples were selected among the Bauhaus and later modern buildings by considering the role of the Bauhaus school, where the basic design principles emerged in the spread of modern architecture, and the scope of the study was created. As a result of the study, concrete uses and equivalents of basic design principles were revealed with the determined examples. Thus, data on how students will benefit from basic design principles have been revealed. © 2023, Nilay OZSAVAS ULUCAY. All rights reserved.
