    Investigating the Personal and Professional Variables That Predict Discrimination Attitudes Among Nurses and Physicians

    Introduction: Healthcare professionals are expected to provide holistic care to their patients without discrimination based on factors such as religion, language, age, gender, and race. Design: It is a cross-sectional descriptive study. Aim: The study aimed to examine the discriminatory attitudes of nurses and physicians working in hospitals in Sanliurfa and to define whether the personal and professional variables predict discriminatory attitudes among them. Methods: The STROBE reporting method, which is one of the EQUATOR guidelines, was followed. Data were collected from a total of 376 physicians and nurses through online platforms between March and June 2020 via the information form and the Discrimination Attitude Scale. Results: The discriminatory attitudes of the nurses and physicians participating in the study were above average. The total discriminatory attitudes scores of the participants varied according to sex, income levels, profession, hospital experience, and unit (p < 0.05). In addition, sex, profession and unit variables predicted the total discriminatory attitudes of nurses and physicians (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Although nurses' and physicians' discriminatory attitudes scores were generally higher, the highest mean score was in the subscale "discrimination against other nationalities." Sex, profession, and unit variables predicted the total discriminatory attitudes of nurses and physicians. Further quantitative and qualitative research is needed to understand the reasons for the highest discriminatory attitudes towards other nationalities among healthcare professionals, to overcome this issue. Clinical Relevance: Nursing or healthcare managers, as well as policymakers, may consider the predictive variables when staffing and training nurses and physicians working in similar regions and conditions.

    Psychometric Properties and Transcultural Adaptation of Turkish Version of the Basel Assessment of Adherence to Immunosuppressive Medication Scale

    Objectives: This study aimed to translate BAASIS (Basel Assessment of Adherence to Immunosuppressive Medication Scale) into Turkish and to test the psychometric properties of the translated Turkish version of the instrument. Materials and Methods: In this single-center crosssectional study, we included 100 kidney transplant recipients in a university hospital in a western city of Turkiye. The Translation and Cultural Adaptation Report from Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research was used for the transcultural adaptation of BAASIS to Turkish. We tested the validity of the BAASIS Turkish version by the level of evidence according to the American Educational Research Association guidelines: content validity, internal structure, and relations to other variables. We calculated item-total correlations of the BAASIS Turkish version to examine internal consistency reliability. Results: The content validity index score of BAASIS was calculated as 1.00, indicating agreement between the experts. Exploratory factor analysis evaluated the internal structure of BAASIS, and the coefficients for inter-item correlations ranged from 0.170 to 0.395. The Immunosuppressive Treatment Adherence Scale and the BAASIS nonadherent scores were significantly correlated (r = 0.673, P < .001). The coefficients for item-total correlation analyses ranged from 0.160 to 0.470. Conclusions: The BAASIS Turkish version has acceptable psychometric properties. The scale can be used in clinical practice and research projects in transplantation to assess immunosuppressive medication adherence.

    The Effect of Compulsory Citizenship Behaviors on Subjective Vitality Among Nurses

    Aim The study aims to assess the extent of compulsory citizenship behaviors (CCBs) and their impact on the nurses' subjective vitality based on self-determination theory. Background CCBs are harmful to both nurses and organizations. These behaviors mean employees are expected to perform additional tasks outside their job descriptions. Although CCBs are highlighted within the recent nursing literature, empirical evidence of their effects is lacking. Methods This is descriptive cross-sectional research. The study included 244 staff nurses using a convenience sampling method who worked in two hospitals in Istanbul. Data were collected via a survey consisting of a personal information form, the compulsory citizenship scale, and the subjective vitality scale. STROBE guidelines were followed when reporting the study. Descriptive statistical analyses, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA test, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical simple linear regression analyses were used. Results The participants' mean scores for compulsory citizenship and subjective vitality were 3.34 out of 5 (SD = 1.05) and 4.15 out of 7 (SD = 1.36), respectively. Nurses' compulsory citizenship scores significantly differed according to their education level, income, and sector. Their subjective vitality scores statistically differed according to their income levels. Regression analysis revealed that CCBs were significant negative predictors of subjective vitality (beta = -0.22, p < 0.01). Conclusion By examining the CCBs and subjective vitality relationship, the current study extended the existing knowledge by drawing attention to the destructive and harmful effects of CCBs on positive psychological sources of nurses' subjective vitality. CCBs negatively predicted subjective vitality. Clinical Relevance Organizational factors such as CCBs, which leads to a lack of autonomy, affect nurses' well-being, thus affecting care quality and patient safety. As the International Council of Nurses mentioned, "Nurses cope with many physical, mental, emotional, and ethical challenges. It is essential that we address these challenges in a way that supports their overall health". In this regard, managers and policymakers in hospitals should develop preventive cautions for CCBs. However, in-service training activities should be carried out to increase awareness about the harmful effects of CCBs on nurses' psychological well-being.

    Assessment of the Psychometric Properties of the Online Education Student Satisfaction Scale: a Methodological Study

    Background and Purpose: Assessing student satisfaction is essential in evaluating the quality of education. The number of valid and reliable tools that measure students’ satisfaction with online education is limited. This methodological study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the online education student satisfaction scale. Methods: Eleven academicians from the nursing field provided expert opinions on content validity. Separate 25 students evaluated the language clarity of the draft scale. The study sample included 525 third- and fourth-year nursing students. Finally, a group of 30 nursing students different from the sample participated in the test–retest. The study created an item pool based on the recent literature. The researchers calculated the items’ content validity rates and the scale’s content validity index by taking the experts’ opinions. In addition, item–total score correlation analysis, exploratory factor analysis, discrimination analysis, stability test, and internal consistency analysis were performed. Results: An item with a low-correlation value was excluded from the scale. The correlation coefficients of the remaining items were between.536 and.811. In the second round of exploratory factor analysis, a five-factor structure emerged that explained 72.1% of the total variance. In addition, item discrimination, stability, and internal consistency test results ensured that the scale was valid and reliable. Conclusions: The online education student satisfaction scale with five subdimensions containing 28 items is a valid and reliable tool. Researchers, educators, and managers may use it to evaluate students’ satisfaction with online education. © Copyright 2024 Springer Publishing Company, LLC.

    Critical Thinking Among Clinical Nurses and Related Factors: a Survey Study in Public Hospitals

    Aims and objectives The study investigated clinical nurses' critical thinking levels in public hospitals and related factors. Background Since health care environments have become more complex, the critical thinking skills of clinical nurses are more important in daily problem-solving and decision-making processes. However, little research was conducted on this topic among clinical nurses. Methods It was a cross-sectional study at five public hospitals between December 2018 and January 2019. The study followed the STROBE guideline. Data were collected from 559 nurses by a survey consisted of a data form and the Turkish version of the Nursing Critical Thinking in Clinical Practice Questionnaire. Results Nurses' mean critical thinking scores were moderate level. Total critical thinking scores of the clinical nurses significantly differed according to education, hospital type, shift work, professional category and role. There was a significant effect on the total critical thinking scores of the clinical nurses according to variables. Conclusion This study found that critical thinking levels of nurses' working in clinical settings in public hospitals were moderate level. Hospital type, shift work, professional and educational level and role were significantly associated with clinical nurses' critical thinking levels. Relevance to clinical practice This study provides evidence related to the levels of critical thinking of clinical nurses working in public hospitals. Since the critical thinking scores of the manager nurses, daytime working nurses' and nurses with bachelor's and master's degree education are higher, hospital managers may benefit from the study to implement effective strategies to improve the competence of critical thinking levels of nurses.

    The Turkish Version of the Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation Tool: a Validity and Reliability Study

    Aim: To test the validity and reliability of the Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation Tool in Turkish, which was developed to evaluate the patient safety competencies of nursing students. Background: In nursing education, it is crucial to provide students with the necessary professional knowledge and skills as well as appropriate attitudes in certain subjects. It is essential to address frequently encountered problems, to train nurses who can be aware of patient safety and improve the quality of nursing education. A valid and reliable measurement tool is needed to evaluate nursing students' current patient safety knowledge, skills and attitudes and review the curriculum and learning objectives in this context. Design: This is a validation study with a cross-sectional design. Methods: The study sample consisted of 417 third and fourth-grade nursing students studying at two universities in Istanbul and volunteered to participate in the research. The study used the Turkish version of the Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation Tool was used for data collection. Content validity, construct validity, stability and reliability tests were performed. Data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS programs. Ethics committee approval and permission from the institutions were obtained. Results: Nursing students' mean age was 21.98 (SD = 1.17). The Scope Validity Index of the scale was calculated as 0.97. As a result of the confirmatory factor analysis performed in the original structure consisting of three dimensions, 12 factors and 41 items, it was found that all items were in the sub-dimensions of the original scale and factor loads were between 0.168 and 0.918. Four models were tested in confirmatory factor analysis and Model 4 had the best-fit indices. They were calculated as: chi(2)/df = 2.38, RMSEA = 0.06 and CFI = 0.91 for Model 4. Cronbach's alpha value of the total scale was 0.941 and ranged between 0.642 and 0.932 in its sub-dimensions. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation Tool is valid and reliable to measure nursing students' patient safety competencies.

    A Cross-Sectional Survey Study on Homophobia Among Medical, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Other Health Sciences Students

    Since the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) community may be exposed to violence, discrimination, stigma, exclusion, and maltreatment due to their sexual orientation while accessing healthcare services, understanding, and improving the attitudes of future's health care professionals toward LGBTI individuals seem essential. This descriptive and cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the homophobia among medical, nursing, pharmacy, and healthcare sciences students and examine the related factors. The study included 2,531 students from medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and other health sciences (midwifery, nutrition and dietetics, physiotherapy, management of healthcare facilities) disciplines. Homophobia was measured with the Hudson and Ricketts Homophobia Scale. After getting ethical and institutional approvals, data were collected and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tests. Medical students had the lowest homophobia score, and their mean score was significantly lower than other students. There was a significant difference between students' scores according to years of study, age, sex, acquaintance with LGBTI individuals, providing healthcare services to an LGBTI person, and opinions on providing care. Although homophobia scores of nursing, pharmacy, and other health sciences students were lower than the medical students', policies and expansive content regarding LGBTI should be in place in all health science educational institutes, including medical schools, to prevent students from holding homophobic and prejudicial attitudes against LGBTI individuals.
