    The Current Face of Mosaic Art: Flacking Istanbul Examples

    French artist Ememem is an anonymous artist who started producing his artworks in the city of Lyon in 2016. The unknown street artist brought a contemporary perspective to the art of mosaic by decorating or patching the sidewalks with mosaic art. The term ‘flacking’, which he developed to express the combination of various fields such as upcycling, street art, mosaic art, is becoming increasingly common and attracting the attention of local municipalities. The aim of this study is to discuss the art of flacking, which is a face of mosaic art, which is a very old branch of art, derived from current terms. In terms of scope, examples from Istanbul will be tried to be found and compared with foreign examples. However, it has been seen that modern mosaic trials are still insufficient in our country. It has been determined that for the development of mosaic art, various courses, workshops, contemporary examples to be applied in public spaces and initiatives should be made in order not to lose this valuable art. © (2025), All Rights Reserved.

    The Relationship Between Turnover Intention And Compulsory Citizenship Behaviour Of Nurses

    Aim: This study aimed to examine whether there is a relationship between turnover intention and compulsory citizenship behavior among nurses working in a training and research hospital in Istanbul. Method: The data of this descriptive and relationship-seeking study were collected with the participation of 191 nurses working in a training and research hospital in İstanbul between December 2016 and February 2017. Research data was collected through a questionnaire aimed at learning participants' personal information, Turnover Intention Scale and Compulsory Citizenship Behavior Scale. Data was analyzed on a computer. Descriptive statistics, parametric and non-parametric comparison analyze and Pearson correlation analyzes were performed. Results: Point averages of the nurses between “Turnover Intention Scale” and “Compulsory Citizenship Behavior Scale” were 2.90 (SD=1.11) and 3.42 (SD=0.90) respectively. The correlation coefficient for the relationship between the intention to quit the job and compulsory citizenship behavior was found to be r=0.315 (p<0.001). Conclusion: It has been determined that nurses have the intention to leave the job below the medium level, they exhibit compulsory citizenship behavior at the above medium level, and there is a positive, medium strength and very significant linear relationship between the intention to leave the job and the compulsory citizenship behaviour. © 2024 The Authors.

    Decentralisation as Resistance: Web3’s Potential in Countering Digital Censorship and Redefining Cyber Sovereignty

    The Internet, initially celebrated as a bastion of freedom and openness, is increasingly becoming a domain of control, surveillance, and regulation by both states and private entities. The rise of state control and regulation of the Internet, along with the private sector’s expanding control over information, poses significant challenges to the ideals of freedom and openness that once defined the Internet. This article examines the transformation in Internet governance from a state of minimal regulation to a heavily controlled environment by both governments and corporations and explores how the blockchain technology and decentralised architecture underlying Web3 promise to redefine Internet governance and resist censorship. Through a mixed-method approach that synthesises insights from computer science, political science, and legal studies, the paper argues that public blockchains challenge Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers’ (ICANN) traditional control over DNS and significantly reduce the ability of centralised entities to exert control over content and communication, thereby enhancing freedom of expression and resisting censorship. The ability of Web3 to fully realise this potential is, however, dependent on overcoming complex technical and regulatory challenges. © 2024, Eotvos Lorand Tudomanyegyetem. All rights reserved.

    Beautiful, Sexy, and Happy Celebrities: Perfect Mothers or Instamoms

    The development of information technologies and the Internet has created an enormous economy. In line with this digital transformation, cultural change has come about. Global companies create new trends focused on vanity and pleasure in social media that follow the patriarchal capitalist ideology. Motherhood has also been included in this process, and “perfect motherhood,” as an extension to new generation motherhood, has been popularized on social media. Perfect motherhood requires mothers who are responsible for looking after children and the home to also be successful in their professional and personal lives while looking beautiful, young, chic, sexy, and fit. Recently the celebrification of motherhood, which can be seen on Instagram, became another quality added to the requirements of being a perfect mother. Heightened during the new post-COVID times, the “Instamom” phenomenon conceals the fact that women are driven to more states of increased precarity and vulnerability, alongside unemployment, exploitation, and ecological and economic crises. This study analyzes the perfect motherhood myth through Instamom case studies and attempts to show how Instamoms are perceived by mothers and mothers-to-be. By adopting the digital ethnography method, 30 Instamom accounts (with followers ranging from 135,000 to 3.5 million) in Turkey were observed for a year via passive participant observations. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six Instamoms and 12 follower mothers and mothers-to-be. In conclusion, it was discovered that Instamoms were perceived by their followers as exemplars of knowledge and beauty. Furthermore, the study revealed that both groups were part of the celebrification and branding process, and those who shared knowledge based on experience were considered sincere and created a bigger impression on their followers. It was also discovered that when sharing on social media, these Instamoms attempted to look their best. Moreover, Instamom accounts that prominently use children to increase viewer interaction demonstrate issues related to the “commercialization of childhood.” Tangible advice for transformative change is included at the end of the research. © 2022 Journal of International Women’s Studies.

    Effects of Computer-Based Balance Exercises on Balance, Pain, Clinical Presentation and Nerve Function in Patients With Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: a Randomized Controlled Study

    Objective:To evaluate the use of a computer-based biodex balance exercise system (BBS) on balance, neuropathic pain, clinical presentation and nerve function in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Methods: A total of 32 participants with DPN were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to an intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). The IG performed exercises using the BBS twice weekly for 8 weeks, while CG were informed regarding diabetes self-management. At baseline and after study completion, participants underwent balance (postural stability and fall risk) and neuropathic pain assessment (DN4 questionnaire) and were screened using the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument and nerve conduction test. Results: Among the baseline participants, 14 in the IG and 13 in the CG completed the study. Balance training improved postural stability (overall, p<0.001), fall risk (p<0.001), neuropathic pain (p=0.01) and symptoms (p<0.001), and clinical presentation (p=0.02), but not nerve function, within the IG. At follow-up, IG displayed significantly improved stability (p<0.001) and fall risk (p=0.02) and decreased neuropathic symptoms (p=0.01) compared to the CG. Conclusion: Computer-based balance exercises improve balance, pain, and clinical presentation of DPN, but not nerve function, in patients with DPN.     Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy Versus Graston Instrument-Assisted Soft-Tissue Mobilization in Chronic Plantar Heel Pain a Randomized Controlled Trial

    Background: Although there are studies showing that extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) and instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization methods are effective in chronic plantar heel pain (CPHP) treatment, there is a need for studies comparing these techniques. We compared the effectiveness of ESWT versus instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization using Graston Technique (GT) instruments in addition to stretching exercises (SEs) in CPHP. Methods: Sixty-nine patients were randomly assigned to three groups: ESWT+SEs (group 1), GT+SEs (group 2), and SEs only (control group) (ratio, 1:1:1). The SEs, twice daily for 8 weeks, were standard for all. Group 1 received low-intensity ESWT; in group 2, GT was the selected method. Visual analog scales (for initial step and activity pain), the Foot Function Index (FFI), the 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12), and the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia were used pretreatment, posttreatment, and at 8-week and 6-month follow-up. Results: Visual analog scale and FFI scores improved posttreatment and during follow-up in all groups (P < .001). Although effect sizes were greater in groups 1 and 2 than in the control group in initial step pain posttreatment and at 8-week follow-up, group 2 had the highest effect size at 6 months. Mean SF-12 scores in groups 1 and 2 improved on the post-treatment assessment. Furthermore, group 2 showed significant improvements in FFI scores compared with the other groups at 6-month follow-up (F = 6.33; P = .003). Conclusions: Although ESWT+SEs and GT+SEs seem to have similar effects on initial step pain posttreatment and at 8-week follow-up, GT+SEs was found most effective for improving functional status at 6 months in the management of CPHP. © 2022, American Podiatric Medical Association.     Comparison of Motorcyclists' Hand Grip Strength and Reaction Time

    The purpose of this study was to compare hand grip strength and reaction times in male motorcycle racers grouped according to different ages and the classes of motorcycle used and determine the relation between these characteristics. Sixty-five healthy male motorcycle racers were divided into four groups according to their age and the power of the motorcycles' engine: (Group-1 [G1] = 600CC/23-34 years; Group-2 [G2] = 600-CC/35-48 years; Group-3 [G3] = 1000-CC/23-34 years; Group-4 [G4] = 1000-CC/35-48 years). Then, Nelson's reaction time and maximal hand grip strength were measured for both hands. There were no significant differences between the groups' grip strength (p>0.05). It was found that G1's right-and left-hand reaction time was faster than that of G2, and G1's left-hand reaction time was faster than that of G3 (p<0.05). The right-hand visual reaction time was found to have a negative weak correlation with the left-hand absolute grip strength (r=-0.247, p=0.047), and there was a weak positive correlation between the left-hand visual reaction time and height (r=0.315, p=0.011). G1's right-hand visual reaction time was better than that of G2 (p < 0.001), and G1's visual left-hand reaction time was better than those of G2 (p < 0.034) and G3 (p < 0.011). Although the absolute and relative hand grip strength values did not differ according to the ages and the engine power of the motorcycle used, it was found that the simple reaction time increased with increasing age.

    Factors in Bread Preference: a Cross-Sectional Study of the Comparison of Anthropometric Measurements and Macronutrient Differences According To Bread Type Preferences

    Background: Bread is one of the most consumed foods by humankind throughout history. It is important to evaluate the factors affecting the food preferences of individuals and to examine the effect of frequently consumed food on anthropometric measurements and daily energy and macronutrient intake in order to improve public health and develop nutrition policies of society. Objective: The aim of the current study was two-fold: (1) to determine the factors affecting the bread type preferences of individuals (2) to compare anthropometric measurements and macronutrient differences according to bread type preferences. Methods: The study was conducted cross-sectional from January to October 2018 with randomly selected 1554 volunteer individuals aged between 18-65 years in Istanbul Province of Turkey. The data of the study were collected through a questionnaire form applied by the face-to-face interview method. Demographic information, anthropometric measurements, the most consumed bread types, and dietary records were examined in the questionnaire form. Results: It was determined that the preference for white bread was high (%66.3). White bread and whole-grain bread were consumed 159.4±94 g/day and 131.2±89.2 g/day, respectively. BMI and waist circumference were lower, while the difference was not significant. It was determined that the group who preferred whole-grain bread had fewer carbohydrates, higher fiber, higher protein, higher fat, higher saturated fat, and higher cholesterol intakes in their daily diets. Women, having high education status and old-age popularity increased the preference of whole-grain bread 1.73, 3.39, and 1.03 times compared to the preference of white bread (p<0.001). Conclusion: It has been determined that white bread is preferred more in society. Bread type preference was not associated with anthropometric measurements. It has been determined that the distribution of daily macronutrients of individuals who prefer whole-grain bread is more unbalanced.     Impact of the Turkish Labor Market on Physical Activities and Sports

    The sports industry is growing fast on a global scale and is inclusive of both the manufacturing and service sectors because of its versatility and diversified workforce. In Turkey the growth rate in college graduates with degrees aligned to the industry is significant. However, despite the representation of women in the industry as athletes and teachers, within sports management women remain significantly underrepresented. This discussion highlights the cultural norms that contribute to gender representation and forecasts the gender equity benefits that would accrue to greater female representation in the sports industry. © 2021.     Medical Ethics Assessment Scale for Sports: a New Tool

    The purpose of this study was to develop the Medical Ethics Assessment Scale for Sports (MEASS) and to asses the vison of amateur level competitor athletes, using this scale, about level of compliance with professional ethical principles of their health professionals and the sports medicine organisations with which they come in contact. The study was conducted on 400 participants (n(female)=145; n(male)=255) aged 16-35 from different sports. MEASS was constructed with 13 items and three factors: 'Not harming the patient's body', 'Informing the patient', and 'Maintaining patient's privacy and right to choose care'. The validity value was found to be 0.795. The exploratory factor analysis showed all three factors had eigenvalues greater than 1.0 (55.7% variance). Cronbach's Alpha reliability (alpha) correlation coefficient was 0.725. These results showed that the scale is suitable for factor analysis and reliable. The MEASS can be used as a new measurement tool to evaluate the ethics of health professionals and organisations. The results also demonstrated that athletes feel well-informed and unharmed by their physicians, but would prefer more control over their care choices and how their personal information is used.
