Tsunami Awareness: A Case Study Of Hasköy, Beyoğlu, İstanbul
(Afet ve Acil Durum Yönetimi Başkanlığı (AFAD), 2025) Taskin, H.; Gunaydin, D.H.; Yücel, G.
An earthquake-triggered tsunami, originating from seismic activity in seas and oceans, poses a significant threat to coastal settlements within its impact zone. As part of risk reduction efforts, enhancing public awareness of tsunamis is crucial for mitigating potential disaster-related damages. Accordingly, this study emphasizes the importance of tsunami awareness initiatives by assessing the pre-disaster knowledge levels of the community. The study aims to measure the tsunami-related knowledge and awareness levels of residents in a settlement exposed to tsunami hazards. In this qualitative research, data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with business owners and employees in a purposively selected settlement. The study was carried out in the Piripaşa neighborhood of the Hasköy district in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu region, specifically within the coastal area parallel to the shoreline of the Golden Horn. Data were obtained from 22 active commercial enterprises out of 50 located along this coastal road. During the interviews, five key questions were posed to assess the respondents’ basic knowledge of tsunami awareness. The questionnaire also included images of tsunami evacuation route signs. The questions covered demographic characteristics, business activity sector, knowledge of tsunami hazards, awareness of the region’s tsunami risk, familiarity with tsunami evacuation procedures, and knowledge of relevant institutions and organizations involved in tsunami preparedness. The findings of the study indicate that the majority of the surveyed enterprises predominantly operate within the service sector. Furthermore, the results reveal a notably low level of awareness among participants regarding tsunami hazards, as well as limited knowledge of appropriate response behaviors during such events. While 50% of participants believe that the region is not at risk of tsunamis, 59% reported being aware of tsunami warning signs, which is a notable observation. Enhancing awareness of tsunami hazards and the region’s tsunami risk level is both essential and a priority. © (2025), (Afet ve Acil Durum Yonetimi Baskanligi (AFAD)). All right reserved.

Objective: Bile duct ligation (BDL) obstructs bile flow, resulting in bile and toxic substances buildup that causes liver damage. This study investigated the protective effects of Cuscuta sp. methanol extract (CUS) against cardiorenal injury in bile duct-ligated rats. Materials and Methods: Rats were categorised into four groups: Control (C), CUS, BDL, and BDL+CUS. The C and BDL groups received saline, whereas the other groups received oral 250 mg/kg CUS. After 28 days, blood, kidney, and heart tissue samples were collected for biochemical and histological analyses. Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), direct bilirubin (DB), and total bilirubin (TB) levels were analysed to determine liver function, while Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) and hydroxyproline (HYP) levels were evaluated for fibrosis, and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels alongside Na+/K+-ATPase activity were analysed to assess oxidative stress and membrane injury in the heart and renal tissues. Results: AST, ALT, DB, and TB levels were significantly elevated in the BDL group compared with the C group; however, the levels were distinctly lower in the BDL+CUS group than in the BDL group. Additionally, in both tissues, TGF-beta, HYP, and 8-OHdG levels were higher in the BDL group than in the C group, but decreased in the BDL+CUS group, with Na+/K+-ATPase activity being lower in BDL group compared with the C group and significantly increased in BDL+CUS group. Conclusion: CUS has protective effects against oxidative damage and offers antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits against cholestasis-induced tissue injury.

    (Istanbul University Press, 2022) Albayrak, O.; Ozbeyli, D.; Sen, A.; Cevik, O.; Erdogan, O.; Ercan, F.; Sener, G.; Ede-pazarbasi, Seren
Objective: The aim is to examine the possible protective effect of Cuscuta sp. extract against liver damage induced by biliary obstruction in rats. Materials and Methods: To induce biliary obstruction, the bile duct ligation (BDL) method was used. Sprague Dawley rats were allocated to 4 groups: Control (C), Cuscuta (CUS), bile duct ligation (BDL), and bile duct ligation + Cuscuta (BDL+CUS). Control and BDL rats were given physiological saline (SF), while CUS and BDL+CUS groups were administered 250 mg/ kg of Cuscuta extract by oral gavage. At the end of 28th day, the rats were decapitated, serum and tissue samples were collected, and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), and direct and total bilirubin (DB and TB) levels were determined in blood samples. In liver tissues, transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), 8-hydroxyguanosine (8-OHdG), hydroxyproline, and sodium-potassium ATPase (Na+/K+-ATPase) levels were determined. Results: Serum samples of rats with cholestasis had high ALT, AST, DB, and TB levels, while TGF-β, 8-OHdG, and hydroxyproline concentrations were found to be significantly high in tissues. Hepatic Na+/K+-ATPase levels were decreased through biliary obstruction. Biochemical parameters were drastically reversed by Cuscuta care; also, this was supported histologically. Conclusion: Results showed that Cuscuta extract, through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, provided protection against oxidative injury by biliary obstruction. Also, these results confirm the traditional use of Cuscuta sp. as hepatoprotective. © Ankara Medical Journal. All rights reserved.

    (Istanbul University Press, 2022) Mustafaoglu, F.K.; Ertas, B.; Sen, A.; Akakin, D.; Sener, G.; Ercan, F.
Objective: Obesity is associated with many diseases, including urinary system disorders such as chronic kidney disease and overactive bladder syndrome. Myrtus communis L. (MC) extract has been reported to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of MC extract on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced kidney and bladder damage. Materials and Methods: Wistar albino male rats were divided into three experimental groups: control, HFD and HFD+MC. Experimental groups were fed a standard diet (control group) or HFD (HFD and HFD+MC groups) for 16 weeks. MC extract (100 mg/kg) was administered to the HFD+MC group orally during the last 4 weeks (5 days/week) of the experiment. High-density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, triglyceride and leptin levels were measured in blood serum. Tissue malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels were evaluated biochemically. Kidney and bladder morphology, NADPH oxidase-2 (NOX-2) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-ҡB)-positive and apoptotic cells were evaluated histologically. Results: Lipid profiles altered and leptin levels increased in blood serum. MDA, 8-OHdG and MPO levels increased and GSH level decreased in kidney and bladder in the HFD group. Moreover, degenerated kidney and bladder morphology, increased NOX-2 and NF-ҡB-positive and apoptotic cells were observed in this group. All of these biochemical and histological parameters were ameliorated in the HFD+MC group. Conclusion: HFD-induced obesity causes kidney and bladder damage by oxidative and inflammatory processes. MC extract may reduce oxidative stress and inflammation and play a protective role in obesity-related kidney and bladder damage. © 2022 by the Author(s).

(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2025) Dinmez, Sinem; Özlem, Dülger; Oğul, Zeynep; Dülger, Özlem
Vitamin D deficiency (serum vitamin D <10 ng/ml) and thyroid dysfunctions are prevalent issues globally, particularly during pregnancy. Evidence suggests a potential link between thyroid function and vitamin D levels. This study aims to investigate the correlation between serum vitamin D levels and thyroid functions in wome n during the first trimester of pregnancy. The study was conducted retrospectively at a University Education and Research Hospital’s pregnancy clinic, covering data from August 2023 to March 2024. The sample group consisted of first -trimester pregnant women who attended routine pregnancy check-ups and had complete vitamin D levels and thyroid function tests (n=185). The sociodemographic data form and blood serum level assessment forms were used as data collection tools. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The average age of the pregnant women participating in our study was 27.6±4.9 years, and the Body Mass Index (BMI) was 25.4±4.8 (overweight). The mean number of pregnancies was 1.13±0.3, and the gestational week was 8.19±1.8. Of the participants, 35 had subclinical hypothyroidism, 37 had thyroiditis, and 113 had normal thyroid functions. The study identified 36 women with normal/adequate vitamin D levels (≥20 ng/ml), 113 with vitamin D insufficiency (10–20 ng/ml), and 36 with vitamin D deficiency (<10 ng/ml). The correlation analysis revealed no significant relationship between the thyroid function tests and vitamin D levels of the pregnant women. It was determined that vitamin D levels do not affect thyroid gland function in the first trimester.
