Article Updating the Signal-To Level To Reduce Anti-Hepatitis C Virus False Positivity(Kowsar Medical Institute, 2021) Oztürk, S.; Ağalar, C.Background: Anti-hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) is the only screening test being used in the diagnosis of hepatitis C. In this study, we examined anti-HCV positivity rates in our hospital. Objectives: The aim of administering the anti-HCV test was to distinguish patients with hepatitis C infection from false positivity in patients with reactive results. Methods: The anti-HCV tests were performed at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Training and Research Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey, between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2019. The patients were evaluated retrospectively in terms of age, gender, anti-HCV titer, the clinic for which the examination was requested, the reason for the examination, and the history of hepatitis C. Results: In this study, 511 patients who had two negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results were evaluated as false positive cases and enrolled. The cut-off value was found to be 7.5 IU/ml, with the highest sensitivity of 94.4% and specificity of 94.5% (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.982). The lowest anti-HCV titer (5.2) was from patients without acute hepatitis, who were HCV-RNA positive and diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C. Conclusions: It may be more appropriate to report anti-HCV cut-off value of 0-5 as negative, 5-7.5 as borderline, and > 7.5 as positive. Working with a more acceptable cut-off level with a greater number of tests can help identify patients with asymptomatic HCV infection. U.; Sahin, S.; Duruksu, G.; Gundogdu, O.Background: The radiobiological effect of high dose rate FFF beams on the DU-145 cells was investigated with SBRT plans which have >10 Gy. Methods and Materials: To compare the radiobiological effect on DU-145 cell line four experiments designed: (1) the constant dose rate of 6 MV and 6 MV FFF with increased dose per pulse (2) the effect of dose per pulse while increasing instantaneous dose rate for 6 MV and 6 MV FFF, (3) the effect of increased average dose rate for 6 MV FFF and (4) the effect of protracted treatment time and modulation of 6 MV FFF beams. The survival fraction was counted with WST. Results: FF and FFF for 6 MV with same dose rate and treatment time has no effect on cell survival. Significant differences was observed on survival which were irradiated with 6 MV 600 MU/min and 6 MV FFF 1400 MU/min (p=0.024). There was no difference between 6 MV FFF 600 MU/min and 6 MV FFF 1400 MU/min for 10 Gy. The significant survival difference obtained for 20 Gy. The survival percentages for both 10 Gy and 20 Gy with Cyberknife were obtained higher than FFF. Conclusion: Our in-vitro study presented here show that higher dose rate and reduced treatment time might become a crucial factor for SBRT especially which has >10 Gy fraction dose.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 1Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Occupational Therapists in Turkey: a Cross-Sectional Study(Taylor & Francis inc, 2024) Bektas, Selen Aydoner; Degerli, Medine Nur Ozata; Altuntas, Onur; Bumin, GoncaWork-related musculoskeletal disorders are a common cause of absentism and work disability. As work-related musculoskeletal disorders represent an increasingly important issue for occupational therapists, this study determined musculoskeletal disorders among occupational therapists in Turkey. A total of 238 occupational therapists participated and completed the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. As a result, 73.1% of participants reported experiencing neck pain and 72.3% reported experiencing low back pain at 12 months. Statistically significant differences were found between participants with and without work-related musculoskeletal disorders regarding gender, experience, workplace type, treatment, and daily working hours (p < 0.05). Disruption of cholinergic transmission and neuroinflammation are the most important mechanisms underlying cognitive damage. Beta vulgaris L. var. cicla (BV) has been reported to have various pharmacological effects associated with its rich antioxidant content. In addition, anti-cholinesterase and antiinflammatory activities of BV have been demonstrated in vitro. The aim of this study is to elucidate the therapeutic effect of BV against cognitive impairment, reduction in cholinergic transmission and neuroinflammation caused by intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of streptozotocin (STZ). STZ was administered bilaterally at a dose of 3 mg/kg via ICV to rats, and BV treatment at a dose of 2 g/kg for 21 days was administered orally to STZ-induced animals. After behavioral tests, AChE activity, TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta levels were measured in hippocampus and cortex tissues excised from decapitated animals. Novel object recognition and passive avoidance test showed that the treatment of BV reverted the ICV-STZ induced memory dysfunctions in rats. Furthermore, increased AChE levels in the hippocampal and cortical tissues of STZ-induced rats were significantly reduced with 21 days of BV treatment. In conclusion, these results confirm that STZ administration caused cholinergic hypofunction, neuronal inflammation and cognitive dysfunction in rats, and BV therapy significantly inhibited these changes with its potential neuroprotective activity.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 6Hepatoprotective Effects of Parsley (petroselinum Crispum) Extract in Rats With Bile Duct Ligation(Elsevier, 2023) Ede, Seren; Özbeyli, Dilek; Erdogn, Omer; Cevik, Ozge; Kanpalta, Fatma; Ercan, Feriha; Senerg, GokselBackground and study aims: This study aimed to investigate the possible protective effects of parsley extract (Petroselinum Crispum; PC) against oxidative liver damage caused by bile obstruction in rats. Material and methods: Bile duct ligation (BDL) method was used to induce liver injury in rats. The rats were divided into the three groups each consisting of 8 rats; Sham-operated control (C), bile duct ligated + saline treated (BDL), and BDL + PC treated groups. PC extract was given at a dose of 2 g/kg orally for 28 days. Aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanin amino transferase (ALT), and bilirubin levels were analyzed in sera. In order to determine free radicals in liver injury, luminol and lucigenin chemiluminescence tests used. Oxidative stress was evaluated through superoxide dismutase, glutathione, malondialdehyde, Na+/K+-ATPase and 8-hydroxy guanosine levels. Furthermore, inflammation marker myeloperoxidase, apoptosis marker caspase-3, and fibrosis markers TGF- beta and hydoxyproline were investigated. The liver tissues were also examined for histological evaluations.Results: While PC treatment decreased AST and ALT levels which increased with BDL, oxidant damage parameters also decreased with this treatment. Methods: A total of 32 participants with DPN were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to an intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). The IG performed exercises using the BBS twice weekly for 8 weeks, while CG were informed regarding diabetes self-management. At baseline and after study completion, participants underwent balance (postural stability and fall risk) and neuropathic pain assessment (DN4 questionnaire) and were screened using the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument and nerve conduction test. Results: Among the baseline participants, 14 in the IG and 13 in the CG completed the study. Balance training improved postural stability (overall, p<0.001), fall risk (p<0.001), neuropathic pain (p=0.01) and symptoms (p<0.001), and clinical presentation (p=0.02), but not nerve function, within the IG. At follow-up, IG displayed significantly improved stability (p<0.001) and fall risk (p=0.02) and decreased neuropathic symptoms (p=0.01) compared to the CG. Conclusion: Computer-based balance exercises improve balance, pain, and clinical presentation of DPN, but not nerve function, in patients with DPN. Many modulatory factors are thought to mediate immunomodulatory properties of MSCs. One of these modulatory factors is thought to be HLA-G, one of human leukocyte antigens (HLA). This study aimed to compare HLA-G levels in both stimulated and unstimulated of peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) cultures with "cord blood-MSC" (CB-MSC) and "Wharton's jelly-MSC" (WJ-MSC) at different rates and different incubation periods. Methods: WJ-MSCs were obtained by explant method, and CB-MSCs using Ficoll-paque. They were characterized by flow cytometry. MSCs and PBMCs were directly co-cultured for 24 and 72 h at 1:5 and 1:10, respectively. After incubations, the media were collected and HLA-G levels were measured by ELISA. Results: In the unstimulated group, the highest HLA-G level was found in the PBMC:WJ-MSC-72-1:5 group, while the lowest HLA-G level was found in the PBMC:CB-MSC-72-1:5. When 24-1:5 and 72-1:5 groups were examined, the HLA-G level decreased significantly in CB-MSC groups compared to WJ-MSC, while it increased significantly in the 24-1:10 and 72-1:10 groups (p<0.05). In stimulated groups, the highest HLA-G level was observed in the PBMC:CB-MSC-24-1:5. Conclusions: Our study aimed to evaluate the immunomodulatory effect of MSCs via HLA-G molecule. HLA-G levels changed with different incubation times of two different MSC sources. In this study, we suggest that MSCs as a cell therapy, in particular for immune system-related disease, may be a preliminary in vitro approach to evaluate the immunomodulatory effect via HLA-G.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4Prevalence of Obesity in Prepubertal and Pubertal With Turkish Population Type 1 Diabetes(Springer Japan Kk, 2021) Ozkaya, Volkan; Eren, Erdal; Ozgen Ozkaya, Sebnem; Denkboy Ongen, YaseminTo determine the prevalence of prepubertal and pubertal obesity in children and adolescents with type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (Type 1 DM). One hundred fifty children and adolescents aged 6-18 years with Type 1 DM who attended the Pediatric Endocrinology Polyclinic and were diagnosed with type 1 DM were included in the study. Tanner staging was used to estimate pubertal status. Age- and gender-specific body mass index (BMI) percentile between 85 and 95% was accepted as overweight and > 95% as obese. It was determined that the overweight prevalence rates in children and adolescents with type 1 DM were 13.3% and the obesity rate was 14.3%. It was found that while the overweight prevalence rates (14.1%) were higher in males, the obesity prevalence was higher in females (19.0%). The obesity prevalence rates at the prepubertal and pubertal stages were found to be 17.1% and 13.8%, respectively. The obesity prevalence at the pubertal stage was higher in girls (22.4%) than boys (3.9%) (p < 0.05). The rates both of overweight and obesity in boys decreased from prepubertal to pubertal periods, while those rates increased in girls. Our results indicated that the obesity prevalence in prepubertal and pubertal children and adolescents with type 1 DM was higher compared to healthy peers in the literature. The authors believe that the risk factors for obesity in this population should be determined and obesity-prevention programs for diabetes should be prepared.Article Citation - Scopus: 2Platanus Orientalis (Plane Tree) Extract Protects Against Hyperoxaluria Induced Kidney Damage(Marmara University, 2022) Ayaz Adakul, B.; Şen, A.; Şener, T.E.; Erdoğan, Ö.; Çevik, Ö.; Eker, P.; Şener, G.The aim of this study is to determine whether Platanus orientalis (PO) which has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and diuretic properties and used in the treatment of kidney stones as traditional folk medicine, will reduce or prevent the stone formation in the urinary system. To simulate the urolithiasis model 0.75% ethylene glycol (EG) and 1% ammonium chloride (AC) were applied to Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats were divided into four groups (n=8). The control group was given standard drinking water for 5 weeks. EG group received 0.75% EG in their drinking water containing 0.75% EG and 1% AC. PO extract (100 mg/kg) was given orally for 5 weeks to the preventive group and for last 2 weeks to the therapeutic group, respectively. At the end of experiment, 24-hour urine and kidney samples were obtained. In urine samples, calcium and citrate levels were decreased and oxalate level was increased in the EG group. In kidney samples myeloperoxidase, caspase-3, N-acetyl-β-glycosaminidase (NAG) activities, malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β levels were increased while superoxide dismutase activity and glutathione levels were decreased in the EG group. These biochemical parameters returned to control levels in both PO treatment groups. Histological findings also correlate with these results. Our findings are suggested that PO treatments is effective in both preventive and therapeutic groups. © 2022 Marmara University Press.Article Relationship of Handwriting Skills With Cognitive Functions and Sensory Processing in the Older Adults(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025) Sirma, Gamze Cagla; Yucel, HulyaAims: Handwriting involves complex processes, including cognitive function and sensory processing. Cognitive function and sensory processing change with aging. However, the relationship between these parameters remains unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between cognitive function and sensory processing with handwriting skills in the older adults. Methods: Fifty-six community-dwelling individuals aged 65-75 years completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and handwriting tasks. Results: The mean age was 70.62 +/- 3.49 years. The strongest correlations were observed between MoCA and the handwriting subtest. Low registration, sensory sensitivity, and sensation avoiding were positively correlated with handwriting subtests. Moreover, the results showed that these skills were also predictive of older adults' handwriting skills (p < 0.05). Conclusions: It is crucial for occupational therapists and physiotherapists to integrate handwriting skill assessment into their clinical settings in terms of its relationship with cognitive and sensory processing.Article Ameliorative Effects of Myrtus Communis L. (MC) extract on a high fat diet (HFD)-induced testicular injury in a rat model were investigated using histological and biochemical methods. Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups: a standard diet control group; a HFD group; and an HFD+MC group. The HFD and HFD+MC groups were fed with a HFD for 16 weeks. MC extract (100 mg/kg) was given orally five days a week to the rats in the HFD+MC group during the last four weeks of the experiment. Leptin, triglyceride, high-density lipoproteins, cholesterol, estrogen, testosterone, LH and FSH were analyzed in blood serum. Sperm parameters were evaluated from the epididymis. Testicular morphology, proliferative, apoptotic and NADPH oxidase-2 (NOX2)-positive cells were evaluated histologically. Testicular oxidative stress parameters were analyzed biochemically. In the HFD group, lipid and hormone profiles were changed, abnormal spermatozoa, degenerated seminiferous tubules with apoptotic and NOX2-positive cells were increased in number, and sperm motility and germinal proliferative cells decreased compared to the control group. Moreover, testicular malondialdehyde, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine and myeloperoxidase levels increased, whereas glutathione and superoxide dismutase levels decreased in the HFD group compared to the control group. All these histological and biochemical features were ameliorated by MC treatment of HFD-fed rats. In conclusion, HFD caused alterations in sperm parameters and testicular morphology by increasing oxidative damage and apoptosis. MC extract may have potential protective effects by inhibiting oxidative damage.Article Citation - WoS: 3Morphological and Biochemical Investigation of the Healing Effects of Exercise on High Fat Diet Induced Kidney and Bladder Damage(Marmara Univ, inst Health Sciences, 2022) Elmas, Merve Acikel; Ozakpinar, Ozlem Bingol; Kolgazi, Meltem; Sener, Goksel; Ercan, FerihaObjective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ameliorative effects of swimming training on renal and bladder damage caused by a highfat diet (HFD) using morphological and biochemical measurements. Methods: Sprague Dawley rats were fed either standard chow (CONT, 6% fat) or HFD (45% fat) for 18 weeks, these rats were divided into two subgroups at the last 6 weeks of the experiment. The exercise groups (CONT+EXC, HFD+EXC) were trained daily swimming sessions (1 h per day for 5 days/week) during the last 6 weeks. Kidney and bladder samples were prepared for light and electron microscopic examination at the end of experiment. Malondialdehyde, glutathione, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-a were measured by biochemically. Results: Regular morphology of the renal cortex and bladder mucosa was observed in the CONT and CONT +EXC groups. Degenerated renal corpuscles and proximal tubules in the kidney and degenerated urothelium with leaky tight junctions and mast cell increase in the bladder mucosa were observed in the HFD group. Ameliorated renal cortex and bladder mucosa were observed in the HFD+EXC group. In addition, malondialdehyde, glutathione, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-a levels were also consistent with the histological findings. Conclusion: HFD-induced renal and bladder damage may be related to increased oxidative damage. HIV/HBV coinfection is correlated with high morbidity and mortality. For this particular reason hepatitis B vaccination is crucial for people living with HIV. Methods: Patients who are being followed-up for HIV/AIDS and who have received a hepatitis B vaccine in 4 HIV clinics over a 5-year time period have been studied. Our multi-centered, retrospective, cross-sectional and observational study investigates factors that affect hepatitis B vaccination immune response of individuals living with HIV. The patients have been studied for the parameters such as age, sex, CD4 count at the time of diagnosis or vaccination, HIV-RNA levels, comorbidities, vaccine dosage, success of immunization after vaccination, and the demographics of the patients who have and have not developed immunity. Results: Of 645 patients that are being followed-up in our clinics, 158 received hepatitis B vaccine; 39 of these 158 patients have been excluded from the study because they did not fulfil the inclusion criteria. Finally, 119 patients were evaluated in the study, 17 of the patients (14.3%) were females and 102 (85.7%) were males. The median age was 41.11 +/- 10.09 (min-max: 18-75). Twenty-three of the patients (19.3%) were at the stage of AIDS during diagnosis while 80.7% were at the stage of HIV infection. Ninety-one of the patients (76.5%) have been administered a single dose hepatitis B vaccine on the standard 0, 1st, 6th month vaccination schedule, whereas 23.5% were administered a double dose on the same vaccination schedule. When further evaluated to find whether the patient was able to develop sufficient immunity (anti-HBs >= 10), it was found that the immune response was statistically significantly higher in the patients whose CD4 count was greater than 200 at the time of the first diagnosis and vaccination (p = 0.05 and p = 0.001, respectively). The patients have also been evaluated according to the number of doses they received (1 vs. 2). The immune response of the patients who received two doses was statistically significantly higher (p = 0.041). Conclusion: We can conclude that in the patients with CD4 count less than 200 at the time of their diagnosis and vaccination a high dose recombinant hepatitis B vaccine should definitely be administered as the normal dose and higher dose have similar side effect profiles and the higher dose provides greater immunity.Article Empowering a Mother of Children With Autism: a Case Report on the Impact of Tele-Occupational Performance Coaching on Parent-Child Relationships, Maternal Self-Efficacy, and Occupational Performance(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025) Bektas, Selen Aydoner; Bumin, GoncaThis case report aimed at tele-occupational performance coaching to empower the mother of a child with autism spectrum disorder by enhancing occupational performance, parent-child relationships, and maternal self-efficacy. Over 8 weeks, the intervention addressed goals collaboratively identified by the mother, including self-care, productivity, and leisure-related tasks. Results revealed clinically significant improvements, with a two-point increase in Canadian Occupational Performance Measure scores for both performance and satisfaction. Significant score increases were also obtained on the Parent-Child Relationship Scale and the Early Intervention Parenting Self-Efficacy Scale. The findings underscore the effectiveness of tele-occupational performance coaching in enhancing family dynamics and parental capabilities while emphasizing the potential of telehealth as a scalable and accessible modality for delivering family-centered occupational therapy. HarmanciThis study investigates the reasons behind the transition of nurses from private hospitals to public hospitals in Turkiye, focusing on working conditions, compulsory citizenship behavior, presenteeism, and burnout. The study used a descriptive cross-sectional survey design. The sample consisted of 224 nurses who previously worked in private hospitals and were employed in public hospitals at the time of data collection. Researchers collected data via a questionnaire incorporating demographic questions and validated scales on compulsory citizenship behavior, presenteeism, and burnout. Parametric and nonparametric comparison tests were used to compare participants' experiences in private and public hospitals regarding working conditions. There were statistically significant differences between the groups (p < 0.05). Also, participant nurses' negative organizational behavior experiences scores (compulsory citizenship behavior, presenteeism, and work-related burnout) statistically significantly differed (p < 0.05), considering their scores based on private hospital and public hospital experiences. The study concluded that nurses worked longer and took less leave in private hospitals. Living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has become an increasingly common surgical option because the number of cadaveric donors is insufficient to fulfill the organ needs of patients facing end-stage cirrhosis. Many centers are investigating different surgical techniques to achieve lower complication rates. We aimed to examine our complication rates in light of demographic data, graft data, and perioperative findings as a single-center experience. Methods. The study included one hundred and three patients who underwent LDLT for endvein, and bile anastomosis type rates; anhepatic phase; cold ischemia time; operation time; and blood product transfusion rates were analyzed. Biliary complications in patients with single or multiple biliary anastomoses, right or left liver transplants, and with or without hepatic artery thrombosis were analyzed statistically. Results. There was no significant difference in biliary complications between patients who underwent single or multiple bile anastomosis (P = .231) or patients receiving right lobe and left lobe transplants (P = .315). Although there was no statistically significant difference in the rate of portal vein thrombosis between the regular and reconstructed portal vein anastomosis groups (P = .693), the postoperative portal vein thrombosis rate was statistically higher in patients with left lobe transplants (P = .044). Conclusions. Vascular and biliary complication rates can be reduced with increasing experience.
