Article Citation Count: 0Antimicrobial Effect of Drinkable Lugol Solution(2024) Tunç, Ayşe Karacalı; Sarıtaş, Büşra Merve; Marzi, Mahdi; Dursun, Feray; Kaya, ŞevinThe death rates due to infection in patients receiving long-term antibiotic treatment and hospitalized patients are quite alarming. Treatment of multidrug-resistant strains of Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, which cause widespread nosocomial infection, has become a global problem. Alternative treatment methods are needed for these species, which use all their resistance mechanisms day by day. Recently, it has been seen that iodine (lugol) solution has been used in the treatment of many infections. Significant results are observed, especially for nosocomial and wound infections. The literature on the antimicrobial effect of Lugol solution is very limited. In order to scientifically support such treatments, we aimed to investigate the antimicrobial effect of lugol on resistant bacteria in a laboratory environment. In our laboratory, we have previously isolated Acinetobacter baumannii, Shigella sonneii, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus strains with known antibiotic resistance. For these isolates, the agar dilution method prepared with different concentrations of lugol and the Broth Microdilution Method were used. As a result of our study, it was observed that drinkable Lugol solution affects multidrug-resistant microorganisms at very low concentrations. Thus, Lugol's success in infection treatments will be scientifically supported.Review Citation Count: 15Appraising Systematic Reviews: a Comprehensive Guide To Ensuring Validity and Reliability(Frontiers Media Sa, 2023) Shaheen, Nour; Shaheen, Ahmed; Ramadan, Alaa; Hefnawy, Mahmoud Tarek; Ramadan, Abdelraouf; Ibrahim, Ismail A.; Flouty, OliverSystematic reviews play a crucial role in evidence-based practices as they consolidate research findings to inform decision-making. However, it is essential to assess the quality of systematic reviews to prevent biased or inaccurate conclusions. This paper underscores the importance of adhering to recognized guidelines, such as the PRISMA statement and Cochrane Handbook. These recommendations advocate for systematic approaches and emphasize the documentation of critical components, including the search strategy and study selection. A thorough evaluation of methodologies, research quality, and overall evidence strength is essential during the appraisal process. Identifying potential sources of bias and review limitations, such as selective reporting or trial heterogeneity, is facilitated by tools like the Cochrane Risk of Bias and the AMSTAR 2 checklist. The assessment of included studies emphasizes formulating clear research questions and employing appropriate search strategies to construct robust reviews. Relevance and bias reduction are ensured through meticulous selection of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Accurate data synthesis, including appropriate data extraction and analysis, is necessary for drawing reliable conclusions. Meta-analysis, a statistical method for aggregating trial findings, improves the precision of treatment impact estimates. Systematic reviews should consider crucial factors such as addressing biases, disclosing conflicts of interest, and acknowledging review and methodological limitations. This paper aims to enhance the reliability of systematic reviews, ultimately improving decision-making in healthcare, public policy, and other domains. It provides academics, practitioners, and policymakers with a comprehensive understanding of the evaluation process, empowering them to make well-informed decisions based on robust data. Article Citation Count: 0Bibliometric Analysis of Publications on Stigmatization in Psychiatric Nursing Literature(Kare Publishing, 2024) Dikeç, G.; Sarıtaş, M.; Oban, V.Objectives: In the past two decades, the number of publications on stigma has increased in the literature. Our system consists of two main components. The first one is tactile stimulator, which was designed to stimulate index and middle finger tips, stimulating mechanoreceptors according to the test protocol. Second one is a personal computer running a desktop software for the implementation of test protocols. The flow is as follows; the subjects are asked the question of the test protocol through the personal computer. The parameters are then transmitted to the embedded board on the machine. The embedded board drives step motors to apply the relevant test parameters. The desktop software expects the individual to answer the question using the right or the left mouse button of the computer mouse. After answering the relevant question, the test proceeds to the next step. According to the test protocol, the stimulation process of the mechanoreceptors located at the index and middle finger tips must start and terminate at the same time. From this perspective, the embedded board with 3 18F46K22 PIC microcontrollers produces 2 square wave signals with different frequencies and amplitudes at the same time. The embedded system card developed with the PIC microcontroller is also developed with FPGA. The system has also been tested on 24 blue and white collar employees and a significant result has been obtained.Article Citation Count: 0Determination of the Factors Affecting the Health and Social Lives of Individuals With Type I Diabetes During the Covid-19 Pandemic Process: a Qualitative Study(2024) Eroğlu, Nermin; Kolac, NurcanAim: This study was carried out to determine the factors affecting the health and social lives of individuals with Type I diabetes. Comparison of Internalized Stigmatization in Adolescents Diagnosed With Adhd and Their Parents(Mdpi, 2022) Dikeç, Gül; Bilac, Oznur; Kardelen, Cansin; Sapmaz, Sermin Yalin; Hemşirelik BölümüThis study compared internalized stigmatization levels of adolescents diagnosed with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with those of their parents. The study's data were collected from 107 adolescents diagnosed with ADHD and their parents between July 2020 and March 2021. The adolescents were followed up in the child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic of a university hospital in western Turkey. The information forms for adolescents and parents, the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale-Adolescent Form (ISMI-AF) and the Parental Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale (PISMI), were used to collect the data. There was no statistically significant difference between the total scores of internalized stigma and subscale mean scores of the adolescents and their parents (p > 0.05); only the subscale scores for stereotype endorsement were found to be significantly different (p < 0.05). PISMI scores affected ISMI-AF scores, which can be interpreted as parents' perspectives and attitudes toward stigmatization affecting adolescents. For ADHD, whose frequency is increasing daily, intervention studies should be conducted to reduce adolescents' and parents' internalized stigma and to enhance the educational outcomes of adolescents.Article Citation Count: 0Effect of Body Size on Pulmonary Function in Male and Female Dancers(Editura Universitatii din Pitesti, 2020) Tekin, Demet; Terapi ve Rehabilitasyon BölümüIntroduction: Pulmonary function influence the performance of dancers during their trainings and also their performance stage. Therefore, it is important to investigate the factors that effects the pulmonary function. The effect of body size on resting pulmonary function in modern dancers is unknown but may be related to sex differences. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of body size on resting pulmonary function in male and female modern dancers with the same training levels. Materials and Methods: Thirtyeight (n=18 male; n=20 female) undergraduate modern dancers participated voluntarily and their exercise levels (minimum of 5 days/week, 3 hours/day) and training histories (at least 4 years) were similar. All dancers completed pulmonary function test with a computerized spirometer (MIR, Spirobank, Rome, Italy) according to the American Thoracic Society (ATS) guidelines. Results: There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) between the genders in terms of vital capacity-best (VC-best) and maximum voluntary ventilation-best (MVV-best). The values were significantly higher in the male than in female dancers, and body size had a significant effect, with a small effect size (< 0.2) on the VC-best (F(1,25)= 4.902, p = 0.036) and MVV-best (F(1,25) = 7.864, p = 0.010) values. Conclusion: Although the effect size was small, the effects of body weight, height, and body mass index on the VC-best and MVV-best values were influenced by the fact that male dancers have higher resting respiratory function performance. In a practical contribution, the current results suggest that it is necessary to consider the gender factors when planning and organizing dance training with different models. © JPES.Article Citation Count: 1The Effect of Whey Proteins on the Brain and Small Intestine Nitric Oxide Levels: Protein Profiles in Methotrexate-Induced Oxidative Stress(Istanbul Univ, 2022) Yılmaz Karaoğlu, Sümeyye; Tufan, Elif; Sivas, Guzin Goksun; Gokmen, Begum Gurel; Dursun, Ercan; Ozbeyli, Dilek; Tunali-Akbay, Tugba; Eczane Hizmetleri BölümüObjectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of whey proteins on methotrexate (MTX)-induced brain and small intestine damage. Materials and Methods: 30 Sprague Dawley rats (200-300 g) were divided into four groups: Control, control + whey, MTX, and MTX+whey. MTX was administered at 20 mg/kg (single dose) intraperitoneally to the MTX group rats, and 2 mg/kg of whey protein were administered by oral gavage for 10 days to the whey groups. Lipid peroxidation, glutathione, and nitric oxide (NO) levels, as well as glutathione-Stransferase and superoxide dismutase activities were measured in the brain and small intestine. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the brain and intestine tissues were also carried out. Results: While MTX treatment caused oxidative damage in the brain and small intestine, whey protein administration ameliorated MTXinduced oxidative stress. MTX administration did not change the brain's NO level, while an increase in intestinal NO level was detected. Conclusion: MTX induced oxidative stress in the brain and small intestine changed the protein metabolism in these tissues regardless of reduced food intake. Consecutive 10-day administration of whey proteins has shown its therapeutic effect on MTX-induced brain and small intestine oxidative damage.Article Citation Count: 2Effects Of Exercise And Calorie Restriction On Brain And Testis İn Natural Aging Model;(Istanbul University Press, 2021) Hakgüder, U.; Üstündağ, Ü.V.; Tüzüner, B.A.; Genç, N.; İpekci, H.; Özçelik, R.; Emekli-Alturfan, E.The aim of our study was to examine the effects of exercise and calorie restriction on various tissue damage and antioxidant parameters in the brain and testis of rats in a natural aging model. Thirtysix women received 950 mg omega-3 polyunsaturated (PUFA) supplementation per day for 9 months from 22-24 weeks of pregnancy until the 6 months of lactation and 26 women were enrolled as controls. Demographic data and nutritional status were taken by a questionnaire. Breast milk samples were collected at just after birth and 6 months of lactation. Fatty acids were analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Data was assessed using SPSS 22.0 software. The supplementation increased the level of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) while decreased the level of saturated fatty acids (SFA) in breast milk. The ratio of omega-6/omega-3 FAs was also decreased in the supplemented mothers’ milk. In conclusion the maternal supplementation of omega-3 FAs improved the DHA and EPA levels. © 2018, İstanbul Medipol University. All rights reserved.
