Materials and Methods: Male Wistar albino rats were divided into control (CNT), high-fat diet (HFD) and HFD+APO groups. HFD and HFD+APO groups were fed HFD for sixteen weeks. APO (25 mg/kg) was administered to the HFD+APO group for the last four weeks. The effects of APO on: AS-related metabolic parameters (triglyceride, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, insulin and leptin), oxidative stress (OS), [ malondialdehyde, glutathione, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)oxidase-2, oxidised-low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine], low-density lipoprotein and ox-LDL uptake potential (activin receptor-like kinase-1 and lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1, respectively), tissue inflammation inducible-nitric oxide synthase, nitric oxide), programmed cell death (terminal deoxynucleotidyl-transferase-dUTP-nick-end (alpha-smooth muscle actin), histology and ultrastructure of thoracic aorta were evaluated. Results: In obesity, APO had an ameliorative effect on metabolic parameters, OS, inflammation, ED, programmed cell death and oxLDL uptake potential, but not on foam cell formation and LDL uptake potential. Conclusion: Apocynin may improve ED and AS in obesity by suppressing OS-linked factors involved in the early stage of AS.Article Citation Count: 0Assessments of Energy, Macro and Micronutrient Intakes in Children and Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus(Marmara Univ, Fac Medicine, 2023) Özkaya, Şebnem Özgen; Ozkaya, Sebnem Ozgen; Beslenme ve Diyetetik BölümüObjective: This study aims at examining dietary intake in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) and comparing the results with national dietary intake recommendations. Patients and Methods: One hundred fifty children and adolescents (52.7% female) with an average age of 12.2 +/- 3.1 years and with type 1 DM who were followed by the Pediatric Endocrinology Polyclinic participated in the study. Three-day food intake records and clinical information regarding the type 1 DM condition of the participants were obtained. Results: No gender-related significant difference was found among the participants regarding food intake. The percentage of energy derived from fat (average 39.6%) and saturated fat (16.1%) were higher than the recommended levels in both gender groups. The percentage of energy derived from carbohydrates (female 44.1 +/- 5.7%, male 43.0 +/- 6.8%) was below the recommended levels. The dietary fiber intake in children aged 6-10 years with type 1 DM met recommendations, whereas, it was below the recommended levels in other age groups. Micronutrient inadequacy was common in children and adolescents with type 1 DM. Conclusions: The authors believe that guidelines and programs are needed for children and adolescents with type 1 DM to reduce total fat and saturated fat intake, increase carbohydrate and dietary fiber intake up to the recommended levels, and prevent multiple micronutrient inadequacies.Article Citation Count: 0Association Between Carbohydrate Quality Index and Dietary Patterns, Sleep Quality, Anxiety Level, and Depression Symptoms: a Cross-Sectional Study(Soc Chilena Nutricion, Bromatologia & Toxicologia, 2022) Yalçın, Bahar; Yilmaz-Onal, Hulya; Basturk, Berrak; Yalcin, Bahar; Beslenme ve Diyetetik BölümüAim: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between carbohydrate quality and sleep quality, depression, anxiety, stress and anthropometric measurements. Methods: The carbohydrate quality was calculated using the total fiber intake, ratio of whole grains to total grains, the ratio of solid carbohydrates to total carbohydrates, and the glycemic index. Sleep status was determined using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and nutritional status was determined by taking a 1-day food consumption record and food consumption frequency. Results: It was found that 20% of the participants with the highest carbohydrate quality had the highest sleep quality and the lowest body mass index. Conclusion: Adults should be informed that the quality of carbohydrates that they consume, was associated with better sleep quality and some micronutrients (potassium, magnesium, vitamin A-D-K-C-81-86, Folate) but no significant correlation was found between anxiety, depression, and stress scoresArticle Citation Count: 0Bibliometric Analysis of Publications on Stigmatization in Psychiatric Nursing Literature(Kare Publishing, 2024) Dikeç, G.; Sarıtaş, M.; Oban, V.Objectives: In the past two decades, the number of publications on stigma has increased in the literature. This study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of publications related to stigmatization in the psychiatric nursing literature. Methods: In this study, a search was performed on the PubMed database on September 11, 2022, with the Medical Searching Terms “(Stigmatization [Title OR Abstract] OR Social Stigma [Title OR Abstract]) OR (Stigma [Title OR Abstract] OR Stereotyping [Title OR Abstract] OR Discrimination [Title OR Abstract]) AND (Psychiatric Nursing [Title OR Abstract] OR Nursing [Title OR Abstract]).” Between 1990 and 2022, 10,571 studies published in English, available in full text, and published in journals indexed with SCI, SSCI, and ESCI were found. Results: The number of published articles reached the highest number in 2020, with an increase of 4.05 times in 30 years; it was determined that 92.8% of the publications were of the descriptive study, and Happell was the most productive author in this field. Frequently, articles were published in the Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing (n=762), Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services (n=550), International Journal of Mental Health Nursing (n=480), Issues in Mental Health Nursing (n=445), and Journal of Advanced Nursing (n=429). It was determined that the top five most frequently repeated keywords were humans, female, psychiatric nursing, male, and adult, respectively. Conclusion: The findings obtained from this study can provide information about the number of publications, research types, researchers, and institutions, as well as give ideas for new research strategies in psychiatric nursing literature. This study aimed to investigate the changes in the brain after EX and/or CR in metabolic syndrome (MeS) induced by a high fructose diet in rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into five groups. Drinking water including 10% fructose solution was given to rats for 12 weeks to develop a MeS rat model. Animals with MeS were submitted to EX and/or CR for 6 weeks. Blood glucose, and brain tissue damage and antioxidant parameters were measured. Brain lipid peroxidation, sialic acid, mucin, fucose levels increased in the MeS group compared to the control (C) group. These parameters reduced significantly in the metabolic syndrome with caloric restriction (MeS+CR) group, and more significantly in the metabolic syndrome with exercise and caloric restriction group (MeS+EXCR), compared to the MeS group. Glutathione levels, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities decreased in the MeS group compared to the C group, increased both in the MeS+CR group, and MeS+EXCR group compared to the MeS group. Methods: A phenomenological research design was used. The study was conducted with 20 international nursing students enrolled in a foundation university in T & uuml;rkiye. Colaizzi's phenomenological data analysis method was employed in the study. Results: Based on the study's results, three main themes, 'Learning in a different environment', 'Challenges', 'Solution-Non Solution' and 'System difference, Language problems in clinical practice, Broad nursing curriculum, Facilitators, Language barrier, Feeling homesick, Racism and discrimination, Housing difficulties, Lack of funding, Instant solution, Failing to find a solution sub-themes themes were created. Conclusion: It has been observed that students experience different environments, uncertainties, and various challenges, and that these situations directly affect their education and success. This aim of this study was to make the Turkish language validity and reliability of the Child and Adolescent Mindfulness Measure (CAMM), which can be used in children and adolescents about mindfulness, which has been very well-liked in recent years, and which has validity and reliability in many languages, and to bring it into our language for the ages of 9-18. Materials and Methods: The total sample of the current study consisted of 156 children and adolescents, 48 of whom were children and adolescents with any mental disorderdiagnosis according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 (DSM-5). One hundred eight of them did not have any mental disorders diagnosis according to DSM-5, who had only periodic problems or were brought for counseling. Results: In the reliability analysis of the scale, the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was found to be 0.76 for the whole scale. In test-retest reliability two weeks apart, the two measurements have a strong correlation between the measurements (r=0.634 p<0.0001). Conclusion: In conclusion, our findings show that the Turkish version of the CAMM is a valid and reliable measurement tool for the 9-18 age group. © 2024, Galenos Publishing House. However, it has been unclear whether there could be differences between both treatments in early clinical outcomes. It can help physiotherapists to guide in choosing treatment approaches. This study aimed to compare kinesiophobia, pain, range of motion (ROM), shoulder function, and Quality of life (QoL) in patients treated with either conservative (CT) versus surgical (ST) after PHF. In addition, it aimed to determine correlations between fear of movement and seconder outcome measures. This cross-sectional study enrolled the patients having 5-6 weeks (being permitted active movement) after being treated either CT or ST and receiving no physical therapy. Pain, passive and active ROMs, shoulder function, fear of movement, and QoL were evaluated. 42 patients were recruited. Kinesiophobia scores were similar (p=0.55) and moderate in both groups. There was a significant difference in degrees of shoulder active flexion, active and passive abduction in favor of the CT group (p=0.05, p=0.02, p=0.04, respectively). However, there was no difference between groups regarding the remaining clinical outcomes. Furthermore, kinesiophobia showed a moderate negative correlation with energy/fatigue, social functioning, and general health. These findings showed that patients treated surgically did not have more kinesiophobia, less function, and QoL before starting physiotherapy, despite having soft tissue damage and different types of fractures. Cold chain transportation is an important issue in basic food and health product logistics to prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms and to ensure that the products remain intact. In this study, it is aimed to determine the right cold chain logistics firm for company EDB that is a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) operating in the food industry. Firstly, the selection criteria are defined according to the literature survey and expert views. AHP approach has been used to calculate the weight of them. After the determination of weight of criteria, VIKOR approach has been used to identify the best cold chain logistics firm for company EDB. Sixty-five healthy male motorcycle racers were divided into four groups according to their age and the power of the motorcycles’ engine: (Group-1 [G1] = 600-CC/23-34 years; Group-2 [G2] = 600-CC/35-48 years; Group-3 [G3] = 1000-CC/23-34 years; Group-4 [G4] = 1000-CC/35-48 years). Then, Nelson’s reaction time and maximal hand grip strength were measured for both hands. There were no significant differences between the groups’ grip strength (p>0.05). It was found that G1’s right-and left-hand reaction time was faster than that of G2, and G1’s left-hand reaction time was faster than that of G3 (p<0.05). The right-hand visual reaction time was found to have a negative weak correlation with the left-hand absolute grip strength (r=-0.247, p=0.047), and there was a weak positive correlation between the left-hand visual reaction time and height (r=0.315, p=0.011). G1’s right-hand visual reaction time was better than that of G2 (p< 0.001), and G1’s visual left-hand reaction time was better than those of G2 (p< 0.034) and G3 (p< 0.011). Although the absolute and relative hand grip strength values did not differ according to the ages and the engine power of the motorcycle used, it was found that the simple reaction time increased with increasing age. © 2022 Didactic Asociation Andalucia. METHODS: Spraque Dawley rats were used in the study. For the cholestatic liver disease model, the bile duct ligation (BDL) was applied. The groups were determined as control, Cuscuta sp. (CUS), BDL and BDL + CUS. Double ligation was performed in the bile duct in the BDL groups. For the applications, saline (SF) was administered to the control and BDL groups for 28 days while 250 mg/ kg of Cuscuta sp. extract was given by oral gavage to the CUS and BDL + CUS groups. At the end of the experiment, cognitive evaluations were made by applying new object recognition and Morris water maze tests. After these tests, blood-brain barrier (BBB) measurements were made in half of the groups. In the other half of the groups, brain tissue samples were taken by decapitation and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (Na+/K+-ATPase) measurements were made in the tissues. Histological examinations of the tissues were also performed. RESULTS: Cognitive performance was low, and BBB permeability was found to be increased in the group with bile duct ligation. In addition, TGF-β and 8-OHdG levels were increased in tissues, while Na+/K+-ATPase enzyme activity was suppressed. Treatment with Cuscuta sp. increased cognitive performance and decreased BBB permeability. Other biochemical parameters examined were significantly (p<0.05–0.001) reversed and supported by histological findings. CONCLUSION: Our findings in the study suggest that dodder plant may be beneficial for the protection of cognitive performance and brain tissue in encephalopathy caused by cholestasis. © 2024, Kare Publishing. Also, phenolic compounds of C. coggygria were characterised by LC-MS/MS. Wistar albino rats weighing 200-250 g were exposed to 90 degrees C bath for 10 s to induce burn injury, involving 30% of the total body surface area. In the treatment groups, 5% C. coggygria ethanol extract was applied topically as a cream immediately after the burn. Blood and skin tissue samples were taken after decapitation at the 4th and 48th hours following the burn procedure. Interleukin 1-beta (IL-1 beta) and tumour necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) were determined in serum samples, and hydroxyproline, prostoglandin E2 (PGE2), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxy-guanosine (8-OHdG) levels were determined in skin tissue samples. Increased levels of serum cytokines were decreased with C. coggygria treatment in both periods. MPO activity, prostaglandine (PGE2), and 8-OhdG levels increased, while hydroxyproline levels decreased due to burn damage. On the other hand, these parameters were returned to its normal levels with C. coggygria treatment. In addition, the tissue histology of animals treated with C. coggygria showed a complete epithelialization with increased collagenation. As a result, C. coggygria may be an alternative treatment approach for burns-induced skin damage and wounds.Article Citation Count: 0The Effect of Myrtus Communis L. Oxidative stress has been shown to be a contributing factor for nephrolithiasis and many agents have been studied to prevent and treat oxidative stress-related nephrolithiasis and renal damage. Myrtus communis (MC) extract has been shown to be an important antioxidant in different animal models. In this study, MC extract was administered preventively or therapeutically to rats with kidney stones, and its effectiveness was investigated. METHODS: Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups (n=8); control (C), ethylene glycol (EG), EG+preventive MC, and EG+curative MC groups. The nephrolithiasis model was created by adding 0.75% EG to drinking water for 8 weeks. Ultimately, 24-hour urine was collected to measure calcium, citrate, and creatinine levels. After decapitation, kidney tissues were harvested for histological analyses, measurement of osteopontin and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels, and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase (NAG), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and caspase-3 activities. RESULTS: In 24-hour urine samples, calcium, citrate and creatinine levels were decreased in the EG group, while oxalate levels were increased and in treatment groups these parameters returned to control levels. MPO, 8-OHdG, caspase-3 and NAG activity were significantly increased in tissue and these changes were reversed in both MC groups. Histological findings also supported the biochemical parameters. CONCLUSION: MC can reduce oxidative stress and histopathological changes in kidney tissues in rat nephrolithiasis model when used as either a preventive or therapeutic agent. Materials and Methods: 30 Sprague Dawley rats (200-300 g) were divided into four groups: Control, control + whey, MTX, and MTX+whey. MTX was administered at 20 mg/kg (single dose) intraperitoneally to the MTX group rats, and 2 mg/kg of whey protein were administered by oral gavage for 10 days to the whey groups. Lipid peroxidation, glutathione, and nitric oxide (NO) levels, as well as glutathione-Stransferase and superoxide dismutase activities were measured in the brain and small intestine. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the brain and intestine tissues were also carried out. Results: While MTX treatment caused oxidative damage in the brain and small intestine, whey protein administration ameliorated MTXinduced oxidative stress. MTX administration did not change the brain's NO level, while an increase in intestinal NO level was detected. Conclusion: MTX induced oxidative stress in the brain and small intestine changed the protein metabolism in these tissues regardless of reduced food intake. For this purpose, male Sprague-Dawley rats were the control group (C), the elderly (A), the elderly with calorie restriction (ACR), the elderly who were exercised (AE) and the elderly who were exercised with calorie restriction (ACRE), they were divided into 5 groups. The control group was composed of three-month-old animals. The other group consisted of 15-month-old rats. Exercise and calorie restriction were applied for 6 weeks. At the end of the experiment, lipid peroxidation (LPO), nitric oxide (NO), glutathione (GSH) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-trans-ferase (GST) and tissue factor (TF) were determined in brain and testicular tissues homogenates. As a result of the study, the A group’s brain and testis LPO, NO levels and TF activity increased, GSH levels and SOD, CAT and GST activities decreased, when compared to the C group. As a result of our study, an increase in oxidant damage was observed with TF activity in the brain and testis in the natural aging model, and positive effects of exercise and calorie restriction on the antioxidant levels in the brain were determined, especially in aging. © 2021, Istanbul University Press. This study aimed to examine the impacts of BPA on serum oxidative stress in rats and to detect the antioxidant feature of Panax ginseng (PxG) in reducing BPA-induced oxidative stress. Materials and Methods: Wistar Albino rats (250-300 g) were divided into control, control + PxG, BPA, and BPA + PxG groups. 50 mg/kg BPA and 100 mg/g PxG were given for six weeks. Serum total antioxidant and oxidant status, lipid peroxidation, and glutathione levels were determined. Results: BPA administration increased total oxidant status and lipid peroxidation, while PxG administration to the BPA group decreased these parameters. PxG also increased total antioxidant status and glutathione levels compared to the BPA group. Conclusion: BPA was seen to cause an increase in oxidative parameters and PxG administration to restore the oxidative stress that was generated after BPA exposure, suggesting that this may help to prevent the adverse effects caused by BPA exposure.Article Citation Count: 0Efficiency of Modulated and Dose Rate Altered Flattening Filter Free Beams in High Dose Per Fraction Radiotherapy Applications on the Survival of Prostate Cancer Cell Lines(Novin Medical Radiation Institute, 2021) Öztürk, Ayşe; Şahin, Sevim; Güngör, G.; Karabey, A.U.; Şahin, S.; Duruksu, G.; Gündoğdu, Ö.; Mimarlık Bölümü; Elektrik-elektronik Mühendisliği BölümüBackground: The radiobiological effect of high dose rate FFF beams on the DU-145 cells was investigated with SBRT plans which have >10 Gy. Methods and Materials: To compare the radiobiological effect on DU-145 cell line four experiments designed: (1) the constant dose rate of 6 MV and 6 MV FFF with increased dose per pulse (2) the effect of dose per pulse while increasing instantaneous dose rate for 6 MV and 6 MV FFF, (3) the effect of increased average dose rate for 6 MV FFF and (4) the effect of protracted treatment time and modulation of 6 MV FFF beams. The survival fraction was counted with WST. Results: FF and FFF for 6 MV with same dose rate and treatment time has no effect on cell survival. Significant differences was observed on survival which were irradiated with 6 MV 600 MU/min and 6 MV FFF 1400 MU/min (p=0.024). There was no difference between 6 MV FFF 600 MU/min and 6 MV FFF 1400 MU/min for 10 Gy. The significant survival difference obtained for 20 Gy. The survival percentages for both 10 Gy and 20 Gy with Cyberknife were obtained higher than FFF. Conclusion: Our in-vitro study presented here show that higher dose rate and reduced treatment time might become a crucial factor for SBRT especially which has >10 Gy fraction dose. © 2021 Novin Medical Radiation Institute. METHODS: The study was conducted with cross-sectional design. The data were gathered from the mothers of children with chronic diseases who were followed up at the endocrine outpatient clinic of a hospital in Istanbul between February 1, 2021, and May 31, 2021. The data were collected by conducting face-to-face interviews with mothers of 117 children through information form, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Coping with Stress Scale (CSS). RESULTS: It was determined that 35.9% of the mothers stated that they had problems during the pandemic since their children suffered from chronic diseases. The mean scores of the mothers were 26.88 +/- 6.69 points for the PSS and 87.35 +/- 11.04 points for the CSS and there was a negative and weak correlation between their scale scores (r = -.190; p < .05). CONCLUSION: It was found that families faced many different problems during the pandemic, such as the treatment and control of their children. Guniz; Orun, Oya; Eczacılık Meslek Bilimleri BölümüBackground Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are commonly used for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, have also been found to prevent cancer. (+/-)(R,S) Etodolac is an NSAID that belongs to the class of cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors. Various derivatives of etodolac are synthesized to boost its anti-proliferative action and lessen its potential negative effects. In our earlier studies, some novel derivatives of etodolac exhibited stronger cytotoxic effects on prostate cell lines and had similar effects on leukemia cells in pre-screening experiments.Objective Using the K562 leukemia cell line as a model, we sought to investigate the anti-cancer properties of a hydrazide-hydrazone derivative (SGK-205) and a 4-thiazolidinone derivative of etodolac (SGK-216).Materials and Methods In the current investigation, SGK-205 and SGK-216 compounds were administered to K562 cells for 24 and 48 hours at concentrations of 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mu M. Cell viability was assessed using the MTT test, and apoptosis by Annexin V-PI staining and mitochondrial membrane potential assays, together with mRNA expressions of apoptotic proteins. The levels of the proteins, HER2 and COX2, were also examined to evaluate COX2 inhibitory capacity.Results In K562 cells, there was a definite dose-dependent response to SGK-205 and SGK-216 compounds. Results from MTT viability tests, together with mitochondrial membrane potential measurements and Annexin V-PI staining, revealed that SGK-216 and SGK-205 significantly outperformed etodolac in terms of their apoptotic and anti-proliferative activities. The concentration range of 10-20 mu M for both chemicals was sufficient to start biological responses. Apoptosis was also investigated through the expressions of pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins. Additionally, gene expression research demonstrated SGK-205 to be a beneficial substitute to etodolac in lowering COX-2 and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) expression.Conclusion Our data indicated both derivatives to have higher anti-proliferative and apoptotic effects compared to etodolac. An overall assessment highlighting apoptotic induction potential, acceptable toxicity levels, a consistent dose-response relationship, and COX2 inhibitory actions, in particular, indicated SGK-205 as a viable novel therapeutic.
