GunizIn our continuing search for new anticancer agents, herein we report the synthesis of 2-(4-chloro-3-methylphenoxy)-N'-[(aryl)methylidene]acetohydrazides 3a-j and the evaluation of their anticancer activities on cell viability, morphological changes and caspase-3 activity in cancer cell lines including gastric cancer (MKN45), cervical cancer (HeLa) and breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) cells. 2-(4-chloro-3-methylphenoxy)-N'-[(4-phenylthiophen-2-yl)methylidene] acetohydrazide 3g presented the strongest growth inhibition against MKN45 gastric cancer cell lines with the IC50 value of 1.471 +/- 0.23 mu M. Moreover, compounds 3b and 3g showed high potency against the HeLa and MDA-MB-231 cell lines having IC50 in the range of 2.38-9.72 mu M. These compounds are more selective for the tested human cancer cells than for the mouse fibroblast cell line (NIH/3T3). As a result of the studies conducted in order to understand the molecular mechanism, compounds 3b and 3g enhanced expression of the caspase-3 pro-apoptotic proteins levels besides caspase-3 gene.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Synthesis, Molecular Docking Studies and Adme Prediction of Some New Albendazole Derivatives as Α-Glucosidase Inhibitors(Slovensko Kemijsko Drustvo, 2022) Senkardes, Sevil; Kulabas, Necla; Kucukguzel, S. GunizA series of novel 2-(substituted arylidene)-N-(5-(propylthio)-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)hydrazine-1-carboxamide derivatives 3a-i were synthesized via condensation of N-(5-(propylthio)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl) hydrazinecarboxamide (2), with the corresponding ketone or aldehydes. The chemical structures of the compounds prepared were confirmed by analytical and spectral data. The compounds were screened for their a-glucosidase inhibitory activity and all of them showed better inhibition than acarbose, except 3h. In particular, compound 3a proved to be the most active compound among all synthetic derivatives having IC50 value 12.88 +/- 0.98 mu M. Also, molecular docking studies were carried out for the compounds to figure out the binding interactions. Compound 3a has exhibited the highest binding energy (Delta G = -9.4 kcal/mol) and the most hydrogen bond interactions with active sites. Eventually, in silico studies were in good agreement with in vitro studies.Conference Object Tracking Step Counts in Adolescents with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and Familial Mediterranean Fever: A 3-Month m-Health Monitoring Study Using Smartwatches(Elsevier, 2025) Albayrak, A.; Arman, N.; Yekdaneh, A.; Donmez, I.; Acikgoz, Y.; Filiz, G.; Ayaz, N. A. M. A. N.; Tutem, Esma; Baskan, Kevser SoeZGEN; Apak, ResatIn the present study, molecularly imprinted polymers were synthesized using caffeic acid (CA) as a template molecule and then used for the extraction of CA and chlorogenic acid (CLA) from complex matrices. Syntheses were carried out in tetrahydrofuran as porogenic solvent using 4-vinyl pyridine, methacrylic acid, acrylamide, and 1-vinyl imidazole as monomers, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as crosslinker and 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. In polymerization processes, different ratios of the template:monomer:crosslinker (T:M:CrL) were used to obtain the most suitable polymer. Caffeic acid:4-vinylpiridine:ethylene glycol dimethacrylate's 1:4:16 mole ratio of MIP was determined as the most convenient polymer for CA recognition. In addition, nonimprinted polymers (NIPs) without templates were prepared. Dynamic and static adsorption tests were applied to determine the absorption features of the NIPs and CA-MIPs. Separation and purification studies of CA and CLA were performed with molecular imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE) application. All steps of MISPE (loading, washing, elution) were optimized by HPLC analysis.Article Examination of the Mental Health Status of University Students Directly or Indirectly Affected by the Earthquake(SAGE Publications Inc., 2025) Ayık, Y.; Kaya, H.; Sarısahin, S.; Ozturk, B.; Kayıhan, H.Objective: This study examines the mental health status of university students directly affected by the earthquake in the disaster zone and those indirectly affected by being outside the earthquake zone during the Kahramanmaraş earthquake that struck Turkey on February 6, 2023. Methods: A total of 109 students from 37 universities in 24 cities participated. Data were collected using an online survey that included a Demographic Information Form, the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), the Earthquake Anxiety Scale, the DSM-5 PTSD checklist, and the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale-21. Mental health outcomes of directly and indirectly affected students were compared. Results: Students directly affected showed significantly higher levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and earthquake-related anxiety. Among indirectly affected students, females reported higher IES-R, PTSD, and earthquake anxiety scores than males. Regression analysis identified factors such as earthquake exposure, loss of relatives, involvement in search and rescue, and relocation as linked to adverse mental health outcomes. Conclusion: Although students directly affected by the earthquake are at greater risk for PTSD, depression, and anxiety, both groups face significant mental health problems. As these effects may be ongoing rather than temporary, the role of occupational therapy in promoting occupational engagement and mental health in disaster management is noteworthy. © The Author(s) 2025Article Citation - Scopus: 3Universal Design Approach To Analysis of Physical Environment for Users With Multiple Sclerosis(Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, 2022) Çakır, H.S.; Tosun, A.The concept of Universal Design aims for the utilization of every product and environment for every individual without the need for further adaptation. The frequent occurrence of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in societies has necessitated a more innovative and exploratory approach to the field of design. Many of the products and built environments encountered by individuals with MS in their daily lives fall short in terms of meeting safety and accessibility needs. It is essential to establish the correct design approach so that users with MS can meet their needs easily and safely without depending on others. In this research, the problems encountered by users with MS in their residences were evaluated within the framework of Universal Design principles, and design recommendations were stated using a sample case in Turkey. Throughout the study, accessibility challenges, mobility, fatigue and balance problems, vision and lighting conditions, climatization and noise sensitivity, and psychological issues were primarily considered. The residence of the sample user with MS was examined in detail, and an in-depth interview was conducted during the research. The difficulties and life routines of the user with MS were observed and identified. Home design solutions associated with Universal Design principles were represented so that the users with MS have safe and accessible housing regarding their physiological and psychological conditions. The highlighted proposals may contribute to architectural design to make modifications for comfortable and safe housing in related cases having similar symptoms with MS. Future research can benefit from these findings and proposals to provide innovative approaches, develop policies, and conduct interdisciplinary studies on related design issues. © 2022, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya. Varied interventions for CP exist to address medical and physical needs but with limited effectiveness evidence. Environmental enrichment (EE) is an animal model intervention for many neurodevelopmental disorders, including CP, with considerable positive effects. This case report defines the Homeostasis-Enrichment-Plasticity (HEP) approach, which is based upon principles of EE and ecological theories of development and describes its use to promote the developmental and functional skills of an infant with CP. Parent interviews and assessment data were completed before and after intervention. For the interested parameters data was gathered by developmental history, systematic observation of behaviors in the clinical setting and at home, Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Infant-Toddler Symptom Checklist, the Sensory Profle Infant/Toddler, Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2, Gross Motor Function Measurement-88 (GMFM-88), the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), and Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI). The HEP approach intervention was implemented one time per week for 12 months. Following the HEP approach intervention, self-regulation and sensory processing scores improved. GMFM-88 total score improved from 45/264 to 123/264. The Peabody found all gross motor (54-110), fine motor (65-117), and total motor quotient (119-227) scores improved after intervention. Post-intervention observations showed obvious gross motor progress with movement from GMFCS Level IV to Level I. Performance on the Functional Skills Scales and Caregiver Assistance Scales of PEDI also demonstrated notable improvements. BAI scores revealed low anxiety scores for both the mother (13/63 points) and father (14/63) before intervention. These scores did not change after intervention. A definition and detailed description of the HEP approach intervention is presented here for the first time. The case report demonstrated preliminary evidence for the effectiveness of the HEP approach on self-regulation, sensory processing, motor development, functional skills, and caregiver assistance with an infant with CP. Additional studies are needed to validate the findings.Book Part Citation - Scopus: 1Political Discourse on Syrian Refugees in Turkey(Peter Lang AG, 2021) Yiğit, M.H.; Uyar, C.This chapter focuses on a comparative research investigation on how populist discourse and securitization on refugees are constituted by partners of political power. The analysis argues that refugees are instrumentalized in domestic/ foreign politics by exposure to exclusionary rhetoric by political parties in Turkey as of 2018. In the context of the research, the official political discourses and statements of five parties during 2018 general and 2019 local election campaigns, the election manifestos, and post-February 2020 Idlib incident were examined. The political parties are AKP, CHP, MHP, İYİ Party, and HDP. In this context, how and for what purposes refugees are securitized with populist rhetoric are examined accordingly. For this analysis, the usage and content of the terms “Syrian, " “refugee, " “immigrant, " “asylum, " and “under temporary protection” were investigated. © Peter Lang GmbH Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften Berlin 2021.Article Women’s Self-Transcendence Levels After a Cesarean Birth and Its Contributing Variables(Jordan University of Science and Technology, 2025) Abushaikha, Lubna A.; Abdel Razeq, Nadin M.; Abushaikha, Fadwa A.Background: A Cesarean birth has significant implications for women’s physical and psychological health. However, limited studies have explored self-transcendence, as a measure of well-being, and its contributing variables during the postpartum period. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the levels of self-transcendence among women after a Cesarean birth and to explore the contribution of demographic and obstetric variables. Methods: This descriptive correlational study used a convenient sample of 232 women (aged 19-49 years) who completed questionnaires in teaching and private hospitals. Results: Overall, 55% (n=128) of women had high levels of self-transcendence, with a mean score of 45.8 (SD=6.1) out of 60. Self-transcendence was negatively correlated with the number of Cesarean births (r=-0.21, p < 0.001). Higher self-transcendence levels were found among women who gave birth at private hospitals (rpb= 0.41, p < 0.001). Conclusion: A Cesarean birth can be an opportunity for self-transcendence and psychological well-being for women, depending on demographic and obstetric variables. Implications for Nursing: The findings of this study may inform healthcare professionals, especially maternity nurses, in understanding psychological dimensions associated with Cesarean birth. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 5Analysis for Two-Dimensional Inverse Quasilinear Parabolic Problem by Fourier Method(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2021) Kanca, Fatma; Baglan, IremIn this work, two-dimensional inverse quasi-linear parabolic problem with periodic boundary and integral overdetermination conditions is investigated. Also predictor corrector method is considered in the numerical approach. Some results on the numerical solution with two examples are presented with figures and tables. The sensitivity of the scheme with respect to noisy overdetermination data is illustrated.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 5Drivers and Barriers on Implementing Xr Technologies in the Construction Industry in Turkey(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2024) Seyman-Guray, Tayibe; Kismet, BurcuThis study presents drivers and barriers on construction industry extended reality (XR) implementations in Turkey. It aims to investigate the current state and future directions of XR opportunities for architecture offices and construction companies in a developing country. A quantitative approach was employed which involves conducting a survey, performing statistical analyses, and verification of the hypotheses. The data were analyzed by SPSS and Excel using the frequency, mean score, standard deviation (SD), and one sample t-test. Thirty-three different companies participated in the survey with a return rate of 56.89%. The results were considered statistically significant since all the p-values were below 0.05. The findings revealed that even though 60% of the companies are not using XR, 60% companies have near future plans on implementing them. According to the results, XR was considered as beneficial and highly motivating for the near future, yet it needs to be widespread for companies to keep themselves abreast of information and communication technology trends. Finally, by considering the findings obtained from the results this study reaches a classification of drivers as 'increased efficiency: time-cost-quality' and 'increased communication and coordination' while barriers as 'technical limitations', 'high costs', and 'unqualified professional'.Article Panax Ginseng Extract Ameliorates Methotrexate-Induced Multi-Organ Damage Via the Regulation of Oxidative Stress(Marmara Univ, 2023) Macit, Caglar; Ede-Pazarbasi, Seren; Yilmaz-karaoglu, Suemeyye; Tunali-Akbay, Tugba; Karakaya-Cimen, Fatma Bedia; Ercan, Feriha; Sener, GokselOxidative damage plays an important role in organ toxicities caused by methotrexate (MTX). This study aimed to determine the antioxidant effects of Panax ginseng (PxG) extract against MTX-induced liver, lung, ileum and kidney damage. Twenty-four Sprague Dawley male rats (weight 250-300 g) were used in the study. The animals were randomly separated into three groups: a) Control, b) MTX-treated (MTX) and c) MTX+PxG-treated (MTX+PxG) groups. MTX was administered intraperitoneally at 20 mg/kg, as a single dose to MTX and MTX+PxG groups. PxG was administered orally at 100 mg/kg to the MTX+PxG group for five days. Saline was given to the control and MTX groups for 5 days. At the end of the experiment, liver, lung, ileum, and kidney samples were obtained. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and tissue factor (TF) activities were determined in all tissues. In addition, histological examinations were done through light microscopy. GraphPad Prism 5v. was used for statistics, and p<0.05 were considered significant. Administration of MTX caused severe injury in tissues. Findings showed that MDA level, SOD, and GST activities were significantly normalized in the MTX+PxG group compared to the control group. A significant reduction in GSH level observed in the MTX group was reversed with PxG administration In addition, TF activity and total protein levels were found to be impaired in the MTX group, but TF activity was significantly improved in liver and lung tissues and total protein level was significantly reversed in lung and ileum in MTX+PxG group. The results of histological examinations showed that MTX-induced damage was ameliorated with the PxG administration. In conclusion, this study shows that Panax ginseng, thanks to its antioxidant properties, reversed MTX-induced tissue damage and therefore may be beneficial against side effects in patients undergoing chemotherapy.Article Ruhsal Bozukluğu Olan Bireylerin Fiziksel Sağlık Durumları: Kesitsel Bir Çalışma(2022) Gümüş, Funda; Atli, Abdullah; Dikec, GulAmaç: Ruhsal bozukluğu olan bireylerin pek çok fiziksel hastalığının olmasına rağmen bu konu ülkemizde yeterince incelenmemiştir. Materials and Methods: In this study, Sprague-Dawley rats (250-300g) were allocated into groups as follows: control, diabetic, diabetic + chard, and diabetic + insulin. In order to induce diabetes, rats were given 65 mg/kg intraperitoneal streptozotocin. Chard extract was given orally at a dose 2 g/kg for 45 days beginning on 15 th days. Sixty days after STZ injection, intracavernosal pressure (ICP) was measured and rats were decapitated. Blood samples were obtained for glucose, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA)levels, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity while cavernous tissues were taken to analyze luminol and lucigenin chemiluminescence (CL), malondialdehyde and glutathione and along with histological analysis. Results: The results revealed that diabetes caused significant decreases in cavernosal tissue glutathione levels, while luminol and lucigenin CL, and malondialdehyde levels were significantly elevated. Plasma glucose, ADMA levels, and LDH activity were also found to be increased in diabetic group. On the other hand, both chard extract and insulin treatment reversed these biochemical parameters significantly. Furthermore, it was found that the ICP value examined for evaluating erectile functions were lower in the diabetic group, but increased in both treatment groups which were similar to the control values. Conclusion: According to our results, chard extract, similar to insulin, reduced diabetes -induced oxidative damage in cavernosal tissue and protected erectile functions. This effects may be attributed its hypoglycemic and antioxidant properties.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1Cold Chain Logistics Firm Selection by Using Ahp-Vikor Integrated Method and a Case Study in Food Industry(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2020) Buyukselcuk, E.C.With the Industry 4.0, a new trend has started for all sectors and enterprises have entered into a period of intense working and investment to turn into intelligent systems. This cross-sectional study was conducted in 815 women. The International Consultation on Incontinence Modular Questionnaire - Female LUTS and a toileting behaviors form, created by the authors, were used in evaluations. Nearly 50 % of the women had at least one LUTS, 45.8 % had storage symptoms, 7.4 % had voiding symptoms, and 20.2 % had incontinence symptoms. The rates of premature urination, straining during urination, delayed urination, and sitting on the toilet while urinating were higher in women with LUTS than in women without LUTS (p < .05). The rate of squatting on the toilet while urinating was lower in women with LUTS than those without LUTS (p < .05). Various LUTS were common in adult women. Some toileting behaviors such as premature urination, straining during urination, delayed urination, and sitting on the toilet while urinating were higher in women with LUTS compared to women without LUTS. Since the rate of unhealthy toilet behaviors is higher in women with LUTS, it is important to know unhealthy toilet behaviors in the management of LUTS and to organize training programs to prevent these behaviors and LUTS.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Validity, Reliability and Responsiveness of the Cognitive Exercise Therapy Approach-Biopsychosocial Questionnaire (bety-Bq) in Knee Osteoarthritis(Springer Heidelberg, 2025) Bulut, Zeynep Irem; Unal, Edibe; Oksuz, Sevim; Dogru, Atalay; Akyol, Ahmet; Yakut, YavuzPurposeThis study was planned to test whether the Cognitive Exercise Therapy Approach- Biopsychosocial Questionnaire (BETY-BQ) is an appropriate questionnaire in assessing the biopsychosocial status in KOA.MethodsFrequently used assessment tools, OA-specific scale The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities OA Index, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Short Form-36 were utilized for the validity and responsiveness of BETY-BQ in individuals with KOA. The test-retest method, internal consistency analysis, and item analysis were used to test reliability. Both Cronbach's alpha (0.900) and ICC value (0.941) showed that the BETY-BQ has excellent reliability in the KOA population. The Bland-Altman Plot showed high agreement as all differences between the first and second BETY-BQ were found between the 95% lower and upper limits. BETY-BQ demonstrated moderate responsiveness as the effect size and standardized mean response were 0.656 and 0.566, respectively.ConclusionA valid, reliable, responsive, multi-dimensional, and self-reported questionnaire for measuring biopsychosocial status in KOA was introduced to the use of healthcare professionals.Article Evaluation of Octenidine Dihydrochloride-Induced Cytotoxicity, Apoptosis, and Inflammatory Responses in Human Ocular Epithelial and Retinal Cells(MDPI, 2025) Ciftci, Ihsan Hakki; Deveci Ozkan, Asuman; Erman, Gulay; Kilbas, Imdat; Aydemir, OzlemBackground/Objectives: Octenidine dihydrochloride (OCT-D) is a broad-spectrum antiseptic with high chemical stability, low toxicity, and no reported microbial resistance, making it a strong candidate for use on mucosal surfaces. Despite increasing interest in its potential ophthalmic applications, limited data exist regarding its cellular effects on ocular tissues. This study aimed to investigate the cytotoxic, apoptotic, inflammatory, and transcriptional responses induced by OCT-D in human conjunctival (IOBA-NHC) and retinal pigment epithelial (ARPE-19) cells. Methods: Cells were exposed to varying concentrations of OCT-D, and viability was assessed using the WST-1 assay to determine IC50 and IC50/2 values. These concentrations were subsequently used in molecular assays. Pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1 beta, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma) were quantified by ELISA. Apoptotic activation was evaluated through caspase-3/7 activity assays. Gene expression analysis of apoptotic (Bax, Bcl-2), DNA damage-related (ATM, Rad51), and inflammatory markers was performed using RT-qPCR. Results: OCT-D induced a marked, dose-dependent reduction in cell viability in both cell lines, with ARPE-19 showing greater sensitivity. Caspase-3/7 activity increased significantly at IC50 and IC50/2, confirming intrinsic apoptotic activation. OCT-D markedly suppressed the release of key inflammatory cytokines and downregulated transcription of inflammatory genes. RT-qPCR revealed upregulation of pro-apoptotic and DNA damage-associated genes, demonstrating coordinated activation of apoptotic and genomic stress pathways. Conclusion: OCT-D triggers integrated cytotoxic, apoptotic, and immunomodulatory responses in conjunctival and retinal epithelial cells. While these findings provide important mechanistic insights into OCT-D's cellular effects, further studies using primary cells, advanced 3D ocular models, and disease-relevant systems are required to support its potential translational use in ophthalmology.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 5Evaluating the Potential Role of Ai Chatbots in Designing Personalized Exercise Programs for Weight Management(Taylor & Francis inc, 2025) Sarac, Hakan; Ulusoy, Ismet Tarik; Alpay, Janset; Odemis, Hasan; Sogut, MustafaThis study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in developing personalized exercise programs for weight management. Exercise programs were developed by ChatGPT-4, ChatGPT-4o, Gemini-1.5 Pro models, and a group of human expert trainers for a hypothetical obese individual case. All exercise programs were assessed based on the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) guidelines. The chatbot-generated programs were consistent with ACSM and NASM standards, indicating their potential use in low-resource settings. Nevertheless, considerable differences were found between human trainers and chatbots in key parameters, including initial load and target heart rate zone recommendations. While AI chatbots have the potential to enhance accessibility, human expertise remains essential to ensure program safety and effectiveness. The results of this study provide insights into the potential role of AI chatbots in personalized exercise programs for weight management.
