Abstract
The rapid development of digital technologies has significantly changed the ways in which individuals communicate. The concepts of “digital natives” and “digital immigrants” have been used to explain the relationship between different generations and technology, as well as their communication styles. This article examines the communication differences between digital natives and digital immigrants in an academic environment, exploring the causes and consequences of these differences. The study aims to reveal the communication differences between digital native and digital immigrant academics in the digitalization process. In order to determine the communication practices of digital natives and digital immigrants in the academic environment, in-depth interview technique, one of the qualitative research methods, was applied. Within this scope, a total of 24 academics, including 12 digital natives and 12 digital immigrants working at foundation and state universities in Turkey, were interviewed. Fifteen semi-structured interview questions were sent to the participants via email and WhatsApp. The study reveals significant differences in academic communication between digital native and digital immigrant academics. While these differences are partly age-based, they are primarily related to individual effort, willingness to learn, and level of adaptation to technology. The study concluded that both groups have strengths and weaknesses, and that these differences can be transformed from sources of conflict into complementary strengths, thereby enhancing academic productivity.
