Limiting Match Congestion and Implementing Evidence-Based Recommendations to Protect Performance in Elite Soccer

Abstract

In professional soccer, injury incidence remains a major concern for both player performance and player welfare. Elite teams with 25-player squads face an average of 50 injuries per season, equating to approximately two per player. Match injury rates (36/1000 hours) are nearly tenfold higher than training rates (3.7/1000 hours), with congested match schedules identified as primary risk factors. The number of games played by elite athletes has risen sharply, often exceeding 70–80 matches per season, with limited recovery periods between fixtures. Such workload intensification contributes to muscle injuries, incomplete recovery of physiological balance, and cumulative psychosocial stressors, including travel fatigue, media pressure, and sleep disturbances. Three critical calendar phases—mid-season breaks, off-season breaks, and preseason breaks—play a decisive role in mitigating injury burden and sustaining performance. Evidence indicates that winter breaks reduce overall injury days and severe injury incidence, while poorly managed off-season breaks lead to detraining effects, including declines in neuromuscular performance, aerobic capacity, and body composition. Conversely, structured off-season programmes and adequate preseason training sessions increase readiness and reduce long-term injury risks. This review underscores the necessity of balancing competitive demands with scientifically informed recovery and preparation strategies to safeguard athlete health and optimise season-long performance.
