    Universal Design Approach To Analysis of Physical Environment for Users With Multiple Sclerosis

    The concept of Universal Design aims for the utilization of every product and environment for every individual without the need for further adaptation. The frequent occurrence of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in societies has necessitated a more innovative and exploratory approach to the field of design. Many of the products and built environments encountered by individuals with MS in their daily lives fall short in terms of meeting safety and accessibility needs. It is essential to establish the correct design approach so that users with MS can meet their needs easily and safely without depending on others. In this research, the problems encountered by users with MS in their residences were evaluated within the framework of Universal Design principles, and design recommendations were stated using a sample case in Turkey. Throughout the study, accessibility challenges, mobility, fatigue and balance problems, vision and lighting conditions, climatization and noise sensitivity, and psychological issues were primarily considered. The residence of the sample user with MS was examined in detail, and an in-depth interview was conducted during the research. The difficulties and life routines of the user with MS were observed and identified. Home design solutions associated with Universal Design principles were represented so that the users with MS have safe and accessible housing regarding their physiological and psychological conditions. The highlighted proposals may contribute to architectural design to make modifications for comfortable and safe housing in related cases having similar symptoms with MS. Future research can benefit from these findings and proposals to provide innovative approaches, develop policies, and conduct interdisciplinary studies on related design issues. © 2022, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya.     Mimarlık Eğitiminde Bım: Bım’in Tasarım Sürecine Katkısı

    BIM kullanımının dünyada hızla yaygınlaşması, mimarlık eğitiminde de gündeme gelmesinin önemini artırmıştır. Tasarımın sayısal alanda gelişimi ve tüm avantajları dikkate alınarak, bilgisayar destekli tasarım dersleri uzun zaman önce mimarlık eğitimi müfredatına dahil edilmeye başlanmıştır. Tasarım okullarında farklı bilgisayar destekli tasarım yazılımları yanısıra BIM yazılımlarından yararlanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Türkiye’de iki farklı üniversitenin mimarlık lisans eğitim müfredatında yer alan BIM tabanlı yazılımın kullanıldığı derslerde mimarlık öğrencilerinin tasarım yeteneklerinin gelişimine yönelik unsurlar araştırılmıştır. Bu dersler ile öğrencilerin BIM’in amaç ve avantajlarını kavramaları, BIM tabanlı yazılımların kullanım bilincinin yükseltilmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Dersin sekizinci haftasında gerçekleştirilen uygulama çalışmalarının sonuçları ve dönem sonu elde edilen final teslimlerinden oluşan modeller, öğrenci çalışma raporlarına göre değerlendirilmiştir. Değerlendirmede BIM tabanlı yazılımların ders içeriğinde kullanılmasının mimari proje tasarımına katkısı irdelenmiştir.

    Harnessing Adaptive Urban Service Frameworks and Smart Technologies for Sustainable Urban Development in Rapidly Urbanising Cities

    Rapid urbanisation and escalating climate change impacts pose significant challenges for sustainable urban governance in developing nations, particularly where infrastructural inadequacies and resource inefficiencies persist. This study examines how urban systems in rapidly growing cities in Nigeria can utilise smart technologies to enhance resilience, inclusivity, and environmental sustainability. The study's aim is to develop and evaluate an Adaptive Urban Service Framework (AUSF) that integrates digital innovations to foster low-carbon, climate-resilient, and inclusive cities. Objectives of the study include (i) identifying adaptive urban service models that improve resource efficiency, environmental sustainability, and quality of life, and (ii) assessing the extent to which these services strengthen urban resilience and social inclusivity under demographic and infrastructural pressures. A structured survey involving 286 respondents from selected Nigerian cities was conducted, and the data were analysed using SPSS Version 22. The correlation results reveal a positive relationship between adaptive urban service mechanisms and sustainability outcomes (r = 0.987, p < 0.001), indicating that improvements in smart technologies, resource efficiency, environmental sustainability, and quality of life strongly reinforce sustainable urban performance. Similarly, experts' evaluations demonstrate a positive correlation between Adaptive Urban Services (AUS) and the enhancement of resilience and inclusivity within smart urban environments (r = 0.865, p < 0.001). These findings collectively underscore that adaptive, smart-driven frameworks exert substantial synergistic effects on environmental sustainability, social inclusivity, and urban resilience, confirming that the effective integration of smart technologies serves as a strong determinant of sustainability outcomes in rapidly urbanising Nigerian cities. The paper offers a methodology that integrates digital innovation with climate-responsive planning, which theoretically advances urban systems theory. In practical terms, it provides policymakers and urban planners with a scalable road map for implementing adaptive service solutions that connect sustainability, equity, and technology. Overall, within similar emerging urban environments, the study highlights the transformative potential of adaptive urban services in furthering climate adaptation, fostering inclusion, and attaining sustainable urban development.

    Bilgi ve İletişim Teknolojilerinin Tasarımda Biçimlenişi : Akıllı Binalar

    Bilgi ve iletişim teknolojilerinin ilerleyişi kullanıcı konforunu, sağlığını ve güvenliğini ön plana alan sistemlerin yaygınlaşmasına imkan sağlamaktadır. Günümüzde sürdürülebilir bir yaşam için akıllı binalar şehirlerde önemli örnekler teşkil etmeye başlamıştır. İnternetin ve bilgisayar teknolojilerinin gelişimi mimari tasarımda ve yapı sektöründe yeni sistemlerin kullanılmasına, akıllı binaların inşa edilebilmesine olanak sunmuştur. Dünya genelinde kaynakların verimli kullanımına, yaşam ve kullanım maliyetlerinin azaltılmasına, sağlıklı, güvenilir ve çevre dostu yapılara duyulan artan ihtiyaçlar bu gelişmeleri hızlandırmıştır. Bu çalışmada akıllı binaların gelişimine kadar olan süreçte toplumsal ve ekonomik unsurlar özetlenmektedir. Akıllı binaların tasarımında bilgi ve iletişim teknolojilerinin önemi ve desteği teknik olarak vurgulanmaktadır. Akıllı binaların değerlendirilmesinde başlıca kriterler ana başlıklar altında aktarılmaktadır. Araştırmada 2000 yılından sonra kullanıma açılan dünyanın farklı lokasyanlarından başarılı uygulama örnekleri olarak 5 farklı bina seçilerek incelenmektedir. Bu akıllı binaların, bilgi ve iletişim teknolojilerinden faydalanarak ortaya çıkan ortak özellikleri, tasarım kriterleri, sürdürülebilirlik uygulamaları ve yaşam kalitesini artırmaya yönelik katkıları belirlenerek çalışmada değerlendirilmektedir.

    Critical Spatial Reasoning in Designing: A Visitor’s Centre Relating to Beylikdüzü Archaeological Site, Istanbul

    Architectural Design Studio helps students develop the skills to abstract, conceptualise and analyse space. This paper addresses the process of developing critical thinking and design, focusing on the central project, relating to Beylikdüzü Archaeological Excavation Site in Istanbul, Turkiye. This project provides the opportunity for students to explore the context, restrictions of the site and metaphors in design while operating more as an incubator for collaboration than a formal studio course. More specifically, the project aims to improve links between the welcome centre and the archaeological site and hence fills a research gap by exploring the value of producing three-dimensional thinking able to deliver architectural solutions that are new to the context. The purpose of the study is to investigate students' abilities in site analysis, topography and environment for appropriate designs that are functional and sustainable. Methods such as SWOT analysis and topographical studies are incorporated within the framework to propose a unified design solution that is sensitive to both the archaeological site and cultural attachment. The results show integrated and innovative solutions that combined the welcome centre with the archaeological area, helping to enrich the visitor experience. Cultural preservation and taking into consideration the value of archaeological sites to integrate them with minimum damage in new architectural interventions is another aspect seen through this project. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    Kentsel Gelişim Bağlamında Bir Stadyum İncelemesi: Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu

    Spor yapıları kent kültürüne ev sahipliği yapmakta ve bu kültürün yeni nesillere aktarılmasında önemli rol almaktadır. Spor aracılığıyla kent içinde taraftarlık kültürünün yaygınlaştırılması, birlik ve beraberlik duygularının pekiştirilmesi sağlanabilmektedir. Kent kültürü içinde sportif amaçla yola çıkarak belli bir yerleşim yerinin o bölgede faaliyet gösteren spor kulüpleri ile anılması ve hatırlanması yaygın bir durumdur. İstanbul Anadolu Yakasının nüfus, kültürel, sosyal ve coğrafi konum açısından çok önemli bir ilçesi durumundaki Kadıköy için Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadyumu kentin bir parçası olarak geçmişten bugüne önemini korumaktadır. Bu araştırmanın amacı tarihsel süreç içinde kent kültürü içinde yer alan Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadyumu ve çevresinin değişimini ve kentin bir parçası haline dönüşümünü aktarmaktır. Stadın ve Kadıköy’ün kentsel gelişimi farklı tarihi haritalar üzerinden ve farklı yıllara ait bölgenin uydu fotoğrafları üzerinde yapı yoğunluklarının işaretlenmesi ile analiz edilmektedir. Tarihsel süreç içinde yapının oluşumu, günümüze kadar geçirdiği süreçler, kent yaşamındaki ve kültüründeki yeri, ulaşım koşulları, stadyum kullanım günlerinde sosyal yaşam, kentin değişimine ve biçimlenmesine paralel olarak ekonomik sosyal ve toplumsal boyutları farklı perspektiflerle ele alınmakta ve bir değerlendirme yapılmaktadır.
